Artificial intelligence generated a “portrait of hunger” from photos of those in need

According to the UN, over the past three years, the number of hungry people has increased by 10 million people. Conventional methods to fight world hunger are no longer enough – now charities use artificial intelligence

Experts from the charitable organization Feeding America, together with the agency Leo Burnett, created a “portrait of hunger” using artificial intelligence. This is written by the American portal Designboom. To do this, experts used GAN – Generative Adversarial Networks – generative adversarial networks. This is a kind of neural networks that learn to generate certain objects. Experts uploaded 28 photographs to the system, which depict 1 starving Americans – this is one in eight starving people living in the States.

The project was called I am hunger in America. “40 million Americans suffer from hunger. Despite this large number, there is a stereotype that the hungry look like they are homeless or they are only Third World citizens. In fact, hunger is much closer. These are the people we encounter every day,” says one of the organizers of the project.
