Artemovskoe

“Artemovskoe” is a Ukrainian champagne, which is produced by one of the most modern enterprises in Eastern Europe for the production of sparkling wines. The plant is located in the city of Bakhmut, Donetsk region, formerly Artemovsk. The brand is owned by Artwinery, which exports its products to 15 countries around the world. “Artemovskoe” is recognized as the best-selling brand of champagne in Ukraine.

Historical information

In 1878, the German Edmund Farke concluded an agreement with the Bakhmut administration, under which he undertook to invest in the development of the city’s infrastructure. In return, the authorities gave the entrepreneur a piece of land on which gypsum deposits were located. Farke built the largest alabaster plant in the region, under which underground mines stretched for many kilometers.

For a long time after the revolution, the squares were not used, but in 1950 the government decided to build a new champagne factory on the site of the alabaster factory. The former adits were well suited for storage and aging of products – the temperature in the underground premises was around 11-14 °C all year round.

The first batch of sparkling wine left the assembly line of the Artemovsky plant in 1954. Unlike many producers, here champagne was made by the classical method with aging on the lees for up to three years. In 1991, the enterprise ceased to be state-owned and passed into private hands. In 2007, the plant was reconstructed, the shops were equipped with automatic equipment, almost completely abandoning manual labor. In 2016, the company was renamed Artwinery.

Production features

Artemovsk champagne is made from wine materials that come from factories in the south of Ukraine and the Crimea. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir varieties dominate, while Cabernet and Saperavi grapes are used for rosé and red wines. Raw materials entering the production are carefully sorted by type, and then mixed in blends.

The circulation shop is equipped with automatic equipment. Future champagne is bottled, liquor and yeast are added, sealed with a temporary cork and sent to cellars for aging. The minimum wine aging period is 9 months. Artwinery is one of the few companies in Europe where the disgorgement process is automated. The sediment, together with the cork, is removed using special equipment, after which the bottles are delivered to the bottling line.

Awards:

  • Competition of trademarks “Favorites of Success 2017” – the best wine of Ukrainian production;
  • Wine&Spirits 2018, Kiev – the best sparkling wine of the year.

Interesting Facts

  1. Artwinery keeps the recipe of its wines a secret. One of the important components of taste is a special yeast culture, bred by microbiologists specifically for the enterprise.
  2. The plant is the only one in Ukraine that conducts excursions with visits to working technological shops. Guests visiting the departments of blending, remuage and disgorging, descend into the vast cellars. The tour ends with a tasting of six types of products.
