Argosulfan is a preparation used in dermatology and venereology to treat chafes, bedsores and ulcers. The drug has an antibacterial effect, accelerates wound healing. Argosulfan is available only by prescription.

Argosulfan – action
Argosulfan is an ointment, the active substance of which is the silver salt of sulfathiazole. Due to the combination of silver and sulfonamide, the preparation has a better antibacterial effect. Argosulfan is a preparation that should be used topically on the skin, its concentration remains in selected areas for a long time and is hardly absorbed at all.
Silver salt: has an antiviral effect, e.g. against the herpes virus, shingles or chicken pox.
Sulfonamidy: they are bacteriostatic by inhibiting the activity of a bacterial enzyme that is involved in the fixation of dihydrofolic acid, which is needed for the growth of bacteria.

Argosulfan – composition
1 g of Argosulfan cream contains 20 mg of silver sulfathiazole.
Other ingredients: cetostearyl alcohol, white petrolatum, glycerol, liquid paraffin, disodium hydrogen phosphate dodecahydrate, sodium lauryl sulfate, potassium dihydrogen phosphate, methyl parahydroxybenzoate, propyl parahydroxybenzoate, water for injections.
Argosulfan – indications
Argosulfan is available in the form of a cream that is applied to burned skin (burns of all degrees, radiation burns), bedsores, ulcers. The active substance of the preparation is silver salt of sulfathiazole (mainly affects gram-negative bacteria).
Dosage for adults and children after 2 months of age:
- Burns: cover the cleaned burn wound under aseptic conditions with a 2-3 mm thick layer of Argosulfan cream; a dressing can be used (not necessary). The wound should be covered with cream throughout the treatment until the skin is healed or transplanted.
- Pressure ulcers, chronic leg ulcers: apply a thin layer of Argosulfan cream 2-3 times a day on the affected areas. In the event of exudation, the wound should be washed, e.g. with a 3% aqueous solution of boric acid or a 0,1% aqueous solution of chlorhexidine, before re-application of the cream.
In addition to Argosulfan, you can also use hemp regenerating cream for scars, which is also useful for smoothing the skin or reducing wrinkles.

Argosulfan – contraindications
Contraindications to the use of Argosulfan are:
- allergic to any ingredient of Argosulfan,
- allergy to other sulfonamides,
- glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase lackenzyme,
- use in newborns, premature babies and infants up to 2 months of age,
- administration to pregnant women and during breastfeeding.
In people prone to hypersensitivity to drugs (especially to sulfonamides), allergic cross-reactions with benzothiadiazines, p-aminosalicylic acid and sulfonylureas may occur during the use of the preparation.
If you cannot use the drug, reach for Betulin Suspension, which is effective for XNUMXst and XNUMXnd degree burns.
Argosulfan – warnings
- Do not use the preparation in premature babies, newborns and infants up to the age of 2 months (risk of jaundice of the testicles of the subcortex of the brain).
- Do not use the preparation in women during breastfeeding (It is not known whether the topical application of silver sulfathiazole causes the penetration of the drug or its metabolites into breast milk. On the other hand, sulfonamides taken orally are present in breast milk and may harm the baby, causing jaundice in it.).
- Caution should be exercised when using Argosulfan in people with impaired liver or kidney function. In people with severe renal impairment, the concentration of sulfonamide in the blood serum should be monitored (agranulocytosis and anemia are among the side effects of Agrosulfan).
- Argosulfan should be used topically on the skin.
- Avoid contact of the preparation with the eyes.
- People taking medications, e.g. to treat diabetes, thiazides, or drugs to treat tuberculosis, should exercise caution as there is a risk of cross-allergy.
- The ointment should be used with caution in patients with extensive burns who have lost consciousness.
- Serum sulfonamide levels should be monitored if the ointment is applied over a long period of time to a large area of the skin.
- There is a risk of anemia during treatment with Argosulfan, therefore liver and kidney function should be monitored and blood counts taken.
- Avoid long-term use of Argosulfan ointment as it may develop fungi and bacteria that are difficult to treat.
- Parallel use of other preparations on the same skin surface is contraindicated.
- Argosulfan can cause allergic reactions as it contains cetyl stearyl alcohol, propyl parahydroxybenzoate and methyl parahydroxybenzoate.
- There is no information on the effect of the preparation on the ability to drive vehicles and operate equipment / machines.
- Argosulfan should be used as prescribed by your doctor. If an overdose or ingestion occurs, you should seek medical advice as soon as possible or go to the nearest hospital.
Argosulfan and other drugs
Attention! Always inform your doctor about all medications you take, even over-the-counter medications!
The antibacterial activity of the silver salt of the sulfathiazole contained in Argosulfan may be weakened by folic acid, procaine and other local anesthetics from the PABA derivatives group.
Argosulfan and pregnancy
If you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking this medicine. Do not use the drug during pregnancy.
Argosulfan – side effects
Argosulfan is an ointment that can cause side effects, including: allergic symptoms at the site of application, such as itching, erythema and burning sensation. The following may also appear: renal or hepatic dysfunction, agranulocytosis, hemorrhagic diathesis, aplastic and haemolytic anemia, decreased number of white blood cells (leukopenia). Possible severe hypersensitivity reactions and skin reactions (Stevens-Johnson syndrome, exfoliative dermatitis).
