There are already vaccines specifically targeting the currently dominant Omikron variant in Polish warehouses. However, they are not yet used at the moment. This is set to change from September, which is good news. However, not every citizen should wait until then to get vaccinated. Prof. Agnieszka Szuster-Ciesielska lists two groups of people who should make an appointment for another dose today.
- In Poland, you can already take the fourth dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, although this still does not apply to people of all ages
- You can now get a Pfizer or Moderny preparation, the same as for the third dose
- However, this is expected to change from next month. Then, the preparation targeted at the Omikron variant will be waiting for those willing

The updated vaccine is already in stock. But you have to wait
From September, a new, two-component vaccine may be available, containing a component targeting the Omikron variant, and not only – as before – the earlier variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. «We assume that the first vaccinations will take place in mid-September with the updated vaccines intended as a booster dose. The warehouses are already full, we are just waiting for the approval of the regulators and distribution will start immediately after approval »- emphasized in an interview with PAP Prof. Agnieszka Szuster-Ciesielska from the Department of Virology and Immunology at the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin.
Don’t wait for the fourth dose if you’re in this group
According to Szuster-Ciesielska, “seniors and people with immunodeficiencies should not wait until September for the updated vaccine, but take the fourth dose now”. “It is also a question of immunity, which is acquired in about two to three weeks after vaccination. You have to wait for this resistance to build up, and time is of great importance here »- she said.
She added that booster doses are aimed at people who have previously been vaccinated with at least two doses. «It will certainly not be possible to use Moderna as it has been designed to contain only 50 micrograms of mRNA, which is as much as a booster dose. The Pfizer vaccine contains 30 µg of mRNA and theoretically this vaccine could serve as a vaccine for those who have not been vaccinated yet »- she said.
In her opinion, the current vaccines protect against the severe course of COVID-19 to a very good degree. «So by all means – who can, should take advantage of this vaccination, and the rest of the people have to wait until September. I also know that discussions are underway to get doctors vaccinated early, especially those over 50 and those who work directly with infected people. It would be a very good solution »- she summed up. (PAP)
