Booster dose – what preparation?

From November 2, 2021, vaccination against COVID-19 will begin with a booster (booster) dose for all volunteers aged 18 years and over. The condition is, of course, the completed full vaccination schedule with one of the four preparations available in Poland: two-dose Comirnata (Pfizer-BioNTech), Spikevax (Moderna) and Vaxzevria (AstraZeneca) or a single-dose Vaccine Janssen.

A booster dose will be available at least 6 months after full vaccination. For vaccination, mRNA preparations will be used, namely the Pfizer (full dose) and Moderna (half dose) vaccines, with “the same preparation as the two-dose vaccination being preferred”.

What does this mean exactly?

  1. If you are vaccinated with Pfizer vaccine, Pfizer (full dose), and when this is not possible, you will receive Moderna (half dose)
  2. If you are vaccinated with Moderna, Moderna (half dose) will be preferred for the third booster dose.and when this is not possible you will receive a Pfizer (full dose)
  3. If you are vaccinated with AstraZeneki, both Moderna (half dose) and Pfizer (full dose) can be used for the third booster dose.
  4. If you are vaccinated with J&J vaccine, both Moderna (half dose) and Pfizer (full dose) can be used for the third booster dose.

Additional dose – with what preparation?

The campaign of administering an additional dose of the COVID-19 vaccine began at the beginning of September. So far, over 200 have received it. people.

An “extra” dose of the COVID-19 vaccine is given to “immunocompromised individuals” who are 12 years of age and older and have received a complete vaccination schedule (two doses) with Comirnaty (Pfizer), Spikevax (Moderna) or Vaxzevria (AstraZeneca).

As MZ points out, “there are still insufficient data to support the administration of an additional dose of mRNA vaccine against COVID-19 in immunodeficient individuals vaccinated with a single dose of Vaccine Janssen”

According to the health ministry, the same preparation used for the two-dose vaccination is preferred for the administration of an additional dose of mRNA vaccine against COVID-19.

In recent days, there has also been a change in the recommendations regarding the preparation that can be given to people under 18 years of age. Until recently, it could only be Pfizer, now Moderna (full dose) has also been approved.

What formulation will be used with the additional dose?

  1. If you are 12-17 years of age, you will receive Moderna (full dose) or Pfizer (full dose) vaccine with a booster vaccination.however, the formulation that was used in the primary vaccination will be preferred
  2. If you are 18 years of age or older, you will receive Moderna (full dose) or Pfizer (full dose) vaccine with a booster vaccination., but the formulation that was used in the primary vaccination will be preferred
