Can yellow eyes in a teenager be a symptom of diseases?

Good day. My 14-year-old son Dawid is a computer game fanatic. He can sit in his room all day and only look after them. In the free time from school, from the very morning, just after breakfast, he sits at the computer and spends time with them until late in the evening. Recently, during lunch, I noticed some disturbing symptoms. Well, his eye whites changed color a bit and started to be a bit yellowish. The son has a dark complexion, so you could tell immediately that there was something wrong with him. I spoke to a friend and she suggested it might be jaundice.

What do you say? Is it possible for a boy to contract jaundice? He only leaves home to go to school. Sometimes a friend will visit him. I never smelled alcohol or cigarettes from him. I try to raise my son as best I can and I know he is not doing any stupid things. Can these yellow eyes herald, for example, hepatitis? David has lost a bit of weight, but it’s not a drastic change. Recently, he also mentioned that his head hurts a little and he is slightly nauseous. However, he does not show it because he used to play games even during a fever, so maybe he is hiding something. I am asking for advice and even a simple diagnosis. Regards, Jadwiga.

The doctor indicates possible causes of the yellow color of the eyeballs

Madam, you cannot catch jaundice as it is a symptom, not a disease. In adolescents in the differentiation of the yellow color of the sclera as well as skin, Gilbert’s syndrome should be taken into account. It is a mild, harmless disease characterized by a periodic increase bilirubin in the bloodwhich manifests as jaundice. Most often it occurs during severe stress, hunger or fever as well as exhaustion. Addiction to computer games your son develops jaundice.

Of course, there are other reasons to consider besides Gilbert’s syndrome. As I mentioned earlier, for yellow discoloration of the skin corresponds to a high concentration of bilirubin, the excess of which is produced during haemolysis or the breakdown of a large number of muscle fibers. High levels of bilirubin are also observed in viral inflammatory diseases of the liver, as well as in drug-induced and alcohol-related diseases. You must have met the phrase mechanical jaundice. It results from the presence of an obstacle that prevents the proper drainage of bile. Such obstacles can be stones in the bile ducts or tumors of the pancreas and bile ducts.

As for the diagnosis, you will not receive it from me, because without examining the patient it cannot be made. Please see your family doctor with your son. Laboratory blood tests should be performed, possibly also a general urine test. If necessary, the family doctor will refer the son to a specialist.
