In the fight against the COVID-19 coronavirus, all available measures are taken to reduce the risk of infection to a minimum. One of the available solutions is the use of UV-C sterilization lamps. So we asked dr hab. n. med. Tomasz Dzieśćtkowski, a virologist from the Medical University of Warsaw, are they effective?
How do UV-C sterilization lamps work?
UV-C sterilization lamps are the most powerful type of devices that are designed to kill viruses and bacteria in the room. In addition to the UV-C germicidal lamps, weaker ones are also available on the market: UV-A and UV-B. The use of lamps emitting UV radiation is the best way to get rid of bacteria and fungi from the surface, both vegetative, spore and spore.

Germicidal lamps are used in hospitals and private institutions, i.e. in places where infection with sepsis, staphylococcus or pneumococcus may occur.
Due to the growing threat of contracting the COVID-19 coronavirus, the question arises: Are sterilization lamps a good way to disinfect from the coronavirus? Dr hab. Tomasz Dzieciatkowski, MD, a virologist from the Medical University of Warsaw, admitted that the use of a UV-C lamp is one of the disinfection methods. However, he noted that this mainly concerns the surface. Then the UV-C germicidal lamp can be really useful. However, the surface should be irradiated with such light for at least eight continuous hours.

We can protect ourselves against the COVID-19 coronavirus not only by using specialized equipment. The basis is thorough hand washing and disinfection in places where a lot of people gather or where we do not have access to running water and soap.
It is also very important to avoid large crowds of people and to cover the inside of the elbow of the nose and mouth when sneezing and coughing. For this purpose, you can also use a tissue, which will be thrown into the trash.
