Vaccination with AstraZeneca and thrombosis

Due to the EMA decision that AstraZeneca may nevertheless cause blood clots, should people at risk of thrombosis be careful with this vaccine? This question was answered by Dr. Andrzej Ryś, director of healthcare systems, medical products and innovation at the European Commission, member of the Governing Board of the European Medicines Agency.

– No, that could not be confirmed. The mechanism behind the formation of blood clots after vaccination in specific people is also not entirely clear. We suspect that this is an immune response resulting from a very specific pattern of traits in the bodies of patients who have had such problems. But the whole relationship is not clear, it is not known what triggers or promotes such a reaction – explained Dr. Ryś.

AstraZeneca – who should not get this vaccine?

  1. What symptoms after AstraZeneka should worry you? These are signs of a thrombosis

– Women taking hormonal contraception are at risk of developing thromboembolic changes, this will be confirmed by each gynecologist. Blood clots or thrombotic diseases are much more common in women taking oral contraception than in those using its other form. Therefore, people who are taking hormonal contraception should not be vaccinated with AstraZeneka – says prof. Anna Boroń-Kaczmarska, infectious diseases specialist, in an interview with the WP abcZdrowie website.

– It should also be considered whether people whose BMI exceeds the value of 28, or people who are treated with anticoagulants, have stents or a pacemaker, also should not be separated and vaccinated with another preparation – adds the doctor.

It should be emphasized that neither the EMA nor the Polish Ministry of Health has indicated so far that there are groups of patients that should not be vaccinated with AstraZeneka.
