Rheumatological diseases and COVID-19

On December 27, 2020, vaccination against COVID-19 began in Poland. First, people from group 0 were vaccinated, which is the most vulnerable to infection. The registration process of universal vaccination will begin on January 15th.

Many people suffering from chronic diseases, especially autoimmune diseases and inflammatory rheumatic diseases, wonder whether they might be a contraindication to vaccination. Check if you suffer from rheumatological diseases by purchasing the rheumatological prophylaxis – blood analysis package on Medonet Market.

These doubts were resolved by the Polish Society of Rheumatology together with the national consultant in the field of rheumatology. In a statement published on the website, PTR referred to the vaccines currently available in Poland – BNT162b2 from Pfizer and mRNA-1273 from Moderna, both based on mRNA technology.

«MRNA vaccines can be safely used in patients with autoimmune diseases and arthritis, as well as in patients receiving drugs that affect the immune system. So far, no negative influence of mRNA vaccines on the course of autoimmune and inflammatory rheumatic diseases has been demonstrated and, based on current medical knowledge, there are no theoretical grounds for such concerns »reads the position of PTR.

The representatives of the Polish Society of Rheumatology also assessed the safety of vaccinations with other types of vaccines.

«Other dead vaccines have been shown to be effective in immunocompromised patients, including those using biologics. The potentially less effective vaccination in patients receiving glucocorticoids or classic disease-modifying drugs or immunosuppressants or biologics or Janus kinase inhibitors will be better for the patient than avoiding vaccination ».

Other Health Conditions and Vaccinations Against COVID-19

In December, Andrzej Horban, an infectious disease specialist and national consultant in this field, spoke about possible contraindications. He stated that “if there are indications for vaccination, there are actually no contraindications”, except for an acute febrile illness that requires clarification of the cause. “Everything else is not a contraindication,” he explained.

People suffering from cancer, hematological diseases or chronic thyroiditis can also get vaccinated. This was confirmed by prof. Zbigniew Gaciong in an interview with TVN24 a few weeks ago. – There are also no contraindications in these cases, except, of course, allergy to the material from which the vaccine is made – he said.
