Are our sexual fantasies so unusual?

If we really think about it (and not just fantasize about something more), we are concerned with two questions: “Are our fantasies too boring?” and “Are they out of range?”.

A recent study found that unusual fantasies are quite rare. This is reported by a research team led by Canadian psychologist Christian Joyal.1.

To find out what people dream about, Joyal and his colleagues conducted a detailed online survey of 1516 people. Participants were presented with a list of 55 fantasies, each of which had to be rated on a scale from 1 (“not at all”) to 7 (“very much”). In addition to the proposed options, participants could share their own (372 people used this opportunity).

It turned out that three fantasies are typical for men and women (they were noted by more than 80% of the study participants):

  1. Sex and strong emotions
  2. Sex in a special atmosphere
  3. Sex in a romantic place

In addition, two fantasies were found that excite only men: oral sex and sex with two women. 2% of respondents were in favor of relationships with minors or animals. And only 9 fantasies were recognized as completely unusual (for example, the dream of urinating on a partner fell into this category).

Flight of fantasy

But all those who dream of being tied or tied can “sleep” peacefully. Domination and submission fell into the category of popular (that is, ordinary) fantasies. At the same time, the researchers noticed that women, more than men, want to obey, and men, on average, prefer to dominate.

“64% of women surveyed dream of such a relationship, 52% do not mind being tied up, and 36% of women are turned on by spanking. One-third of women fantasize about being forced to have sex, scientists report. Half of the men surveyed also admitted to wanting to submit to their partner and be tied up.

The study allowed scientists not only to reveal fascinating statistics, but also to draw an important conclusion. “Approximately half of the women who fantasize about submission indicated that they did not want their fantasies to come true,” the researchers write. That is, the presence of any fantasies does not necessarily mean that we are ready to bring them to life. This conclusion is supported by other facts: the percentage of women and men who fantasized about a homosexual relationship significantly exceeded the percentage of participants who indicated a bisexual or homosexual orientation.2.
