Are inhalations during pregnancy safe?

Hello, I am 26 years old and I am currently in the fifth month of pregnancy. Recently, my sinus problems, which I have had before, have worsened once again, and this is a problem that I had struggled with before pregnancy. Now I cannot use all treatments, so I would like to know if inhalations during pregnancy they’re safe? For obvious reasons, I cannot use some of the drugs, and even before pregnancy, inhalations helped me. However, I would not like to hurt myself, so I am interested in whether inhalations during pregnancy will not harm the baby.

And of course, I’m also interested in which inhalations during pregnancy can be possibly used – or some herbal mixtures will be good, or completely abandon their use. I will also be grateful for news on the use of inhalation with essential oils during pregnancy – they really helped me a lot before and were effective, and most importantly they brought relief. Thank you in advance for explaining my doubts about inhalation during pregnancy. My sinuses bother me a lot and inhalations seem to be a good way to solve them.

The doctor discusses the safety of inhalation in pregnancy

In pregnant women with sinusitis, the recommended management is not inhalation but theirs irrigation with saline. You will need some type of container and saline to rinse your nasal cavity and sinuses, available from a pharmacy. For irrigation, you can use a squeeze bottle, a syringe or a special nasal rinse jug (neti sweat). Lean over the sink at an angle of approximately 45 degrees and turn your head so that one of the nostrils is facing the sink. Do not tilt your head back. Using the selected tool mentioned above, insert its tip, e.g. a nasal syringe, not further than the thickness of a finger. The inhaler, which you can now buy at Medonet Marekt, will make inhalation easier.

Remember to breathe through your mouth and not your nose during this maneuver. Pour water into one nostril and the saline will travel from one nostril to the other, washing your sinuses as well. It can also come out through the mouth and the saline should be spit out rather than swallowed. After this maneuver, gently blow your nose to flush away any saline residue. The same procedure should be performed on the other nostril.

When finished, discard any remaining saline, wash the equipment and allow it to dry. The results of this method can be seen with regular use, which is essential in the management of sinusitis not only in pregnant women, but in all sinus patients. This method should be used daily to help flush out mucus, bacteria and clear the sinuses. You should not use this method if you have an ear infection in addition to your sinus infection. It is also not recommended to maneuver through a blocked nostril.

Saline rinses the nasal passages or tubules and the sinus openings that connect with them, restores moisture, reduces inflammation. Using inhalation, also with essential oils or herbal blends, has no evidence to reduce sinusitis, so sinus irrigation is recommended instead. However, if this is not a method for you, talk to your GP about what medications can be allowed to be used during the third trimester, as not all local drugs are contraindicated.
