The benefits of homemade yogurts
For Rosalie Chancerelle- Van Bockstael, dietician-nutritionist and author of My little magic recipes for my baby and The new pocket guide to additives (Ed. Leduc.s): “The interest of yogurts lies in their contribution of calcium, vitamin D and good quality proteins which participate in the bone growth children. They are also a good source of live probiotics which support the health of the gut microbiota and therefore promote better immunity. This is why it is important to choose the right yogurts! Those home made, made from healthy products, and flavored with compotes or homemade jams, are free from preservatives, thickeners and colorings. In addition, they are less sweet.
Why make your own yogurts? The risks of industrial products
“Did you know that some industrial strawberry yogurts may contain color; the E120, obtained from crushed insects? This can lead to allergies, hyperactivity, and cancer risks. Are you a vegetarian? Many yogurts contain animal gelatin which acts as a thickener and enhances their creaminess. I therefore recommend that parents make their own yogurts at home and sweeten them as little as possible. If you buy them in supermarkets, choose them organic and natural. “
Recipe: How to make plain or flavored homemade yogurts with or without a yogurt maker?
Instead of sugar in your homemade yogurts, focus on taste and variety! A few zest of orange or lemon, vanilla or orange blossom naturally flavor your preparations.
You don’t have a yogurt maker ? Preheat your oven to 40 ° C. Heat your milk to 40 ° (with a vanilla pod split in half, for example), remove it from the heat. Incorporate the contents of a plain yogurt. Pour into small jars and bake for two hours in a water bath at 40 °. Stop the oven, keep the door closed and let stand overnight before closing the jars and keeping them cool.
Dessert creams are not fermented. They therefore do not have the interesting probiotic activity of yogurt. In addition, they accustom children to consuming sugar in quantity.
If the label of your industrial yogurt mentions more than 3 ingredients of which you do not know the origin, go your way!
« I use my yogurt maker every day »
“I find the taste of homemade yogurts much sweeter, less acidic than that of industrial yogurts. I even learned how to make dessert creams that are very tasty and less sweet than those I find in the store ”. Théonilla, mother of Fleur, 3 years old
“I play with tastes”
“To enhance my homemade yogurts, I use chestnut cream, honey, orange jam or red fruit coulis. Everything is also homemade, except for the honey ”.
