Does red grapes support weight loss?

A study from Oregon State University hopes that red grapes and the juice or wine made from them are a way to lose weight. Scientists studied the effects of four natural chemicals in grapes on liver and fat cells.

One of the chemicals ellagic acid, she turned out to be especially strong. It significantly slowed down the growth of existing fat cells and prevented the formation of new ones, and also enhanced fatty acid metabolism in liver cells. Scientists warn, however, that more than weight loss, we should focus on the action of the grapes in terms of increasing fat burningespecially in the liver, which could improve liver function in obese people.

Research confirms that ellagic acid has a strong antioxidant, anticancer, antimutagenic and anti-inflammatory effect. Its good sources are grapes, but also strawberries, raspberries, cranberries and walnuts.

Are grapes dietary?

Additionally, in 2013, a study was conducted on obese mice that were fed a high-fat diet. One group took grape extract, which in human consumption corresponded to one and a half cups of these fruits. After more than a 10-week study, mice on a high-fat diet developed fatty liver and symptoms of diabetes mice. But mice that received grape extract accumulated less fat in the liver and had lower blood sugar levels than those who did not get the extract. In their adipose tissue, higher levels of PPAR-alpha and PPAR-gamma activity, proteins, which work in the cells and are involved in metabolizing fat and sugar. So, the ellagic acid worked perfectly.

This study, as the author himself emphasizes, is not an attempt to find a cure for obesity or diabetes, but to facilitate the choice of an ordinary consumer which food should regularly land in his shopping basket.
