Does the presence of follicles on the ovaries mean PCOS? Can follicles on the ovaries indicate other diseases? Is this a cause for concern? What should i do? What additional tests can be done to confirm or rule out PCOS? The question is answered by the drug. Katarzyna Darecka.

Are follicles on the ovaries an unequivocal symptom of polycystic ovary syndrome?

Good day. I went to the gynecologist yesterday because he had been tormenting me irregularly for several months Ovarian pain. I know that I delayed it a long time, but I could not mobilize myself. The doctor did some basic examinations and told me that I had follicles on my ovaries. She recommended additional tests and I am to come back to her. Of course, I will do the tests and return to the doctor, but these bubbles are bothering me. I once heard or read somewhere that follicles on the ovaries are a symptom of PCOS, i.e. polycystic ovary syndrome.

This is a disease my mother suffered from and I am worried that it is waiting for me now. Have follicles on the ovaries symptom of PCOS? Or maybe there is a chance that it is something else and they do not mean polycystic ovary syndrome? Should I be worried? Maybe do something already? And if it turns out that follicles on the ovaries are not a symptom of PCOS, how can I avoid polycystic ovary syndrome in the future? Thank you in advance for your help.

The doctor explains the possible causes of the appearance of follicles on the ovaries

Polycystic ovary syndrome are recognized based on the ESHRE / ASRM criteria when 2 of the 3 following criteria are met:

  1. Polycystic ovaries on USG examination – 20 or more follicles in one ovary (according to other criteria, the Rotterdam ones, 12 follicles per ovary are enough)
  2. Rarely or absent ovulation (may show up as rare or absent periods)
  3. Clinical (i.e. visible during a physical examination by a doctor) and / or biochemical (i.e. resulting from laboratory tests) indicators of elevated androgen levels.

Due to the fact that in order to confirm PCOS, two of the three criteria mentioned above are needed, the doctor can diagnose polycystic ovary syndrome only on the basis of additional tests. Vesicles are one symptom, they may or may not be there. Their mere presence, without any other symptoms, is not a symptom of PCOS.

Other causes of the radiological image of “follicles on the ovaries” may be MTF – an ovarian disease involving the presence of a smaller number of follicles (usually about 6 / ovary), but of larger size. Precise the cause of PCOS is not known, but there are known hormonal disorders responsible for the symptoms, i.e. insulin resistance and hyperinsulinemia, hyperandrogenemia and increased LH secretion.

In the treatment of and prevention of polycystic ovary syndrome an increasing role is attached to the modification of the patient’s lifestyle, usually starting with dietary treatment consisting in a constant change of eating habits. Physical exercises, best matched individually to the needs and preferences of the patient, also play an important role. PCOS patients have a higher risk of developing diabetes and cardiovascular disease, so it is important to follow a healthy diet and exercise regularly.

Only at the attending physician will you be able to find out if you suffer from polycystic ovary syndrome, and if your concerns are confirmed, the doctor will surely answer all questions regarding the individual treatment plan, the course of the disease and its complications.
