The sight of pharaoh ants running around the house does not surprise anyone, but flying ants may come as a surprise. Meanwhile, the winged ant variety is quite common, especially in the middle of summer. Are they dangerous to humans?
Flying ants are common wholesalers. They are male ants and females that have developed wings and who will be queens in the future. They are usually 5 to 7 mm long and have wings, which distinguishes them from other ants and wingless workers. Wholesalers are not dangerous. They do not bite and do not transmit any diseases.
Hurtnice, or flying ants in our environment
During the summer period, from June to August, they are invaded, and more specifically – swarming, i.e. the mating flight. The ants leave the underground anthills and make a mating flight, during which the females are fertilized by the males. After the females are fertilized, the males die and the females look for a suitable place to lay their eggs. Then they can appear more often in our homes, but they will not necessarily make a nest with us.
However, their mere presence can be bothersome. Like running ants, wholesalers are attracted to sweet food. Just like the flies, it’s hard to get rid of them. However, they are not as dangerous as flies, which carry many bacteria.
Wholesalers like to nest in old, rotten trees, trunks, garden architecture. They build mounds in garden sheds, near sandboxes or terraces. You can also find them under paving slabs or paving stones.
How to get rid of flying ants?
With the end of summer, wholesalers disappear from our surroundings. If they have settled down in our home during the holidays and you want to get rid of them, apart from chemical agents for ants, you can use vinegar or acetone. Washing the surface of the room where the ants have infested with these products should effectively scare them away. Flying ants are bigger than pharaohs, so they won’t get through the mosquito net. Placing such a mesh in the window can be a good solution.
