Are autistic people intellectually disabled?

Neither autism nor other autism spectrum disorders mean that the person affected is intellectually disabled. These disorders may or may not coexist. Intellectual disability is much more often affected by autistic people with a profound level of disorders.

It is recognized that about 40% of people with autism have reduced cognitive functioning. However, if we take into account the entire spectrum of autistic disorders, it turns out that the percentage of people within the intellectual norm increases significantly. It is worth adding that the diagnostic criteria clearly indicate that the diagnosis of Asperger Syndrome can only be obtained by people with an intellectual norm. In many cases, their IQ is above average.
