Apricot Rattle

Apricot Rattle is a well-known winter-hardy variety, bred back in the XNUMXth century. It is valued for its self-fertility, stable yield and good taste.

History of breeding

The originator of the Rattle variety was the Rossoshanskaya fruit and berry station, located in the Voronezh region. The institution has been engaged in selection work since 1937. Over the entire period of its existence, more than 60 varieties of berry, fruit and ornamental crops (apricots, apple trees, plums, etc.) have been obtained at the station. Many of them are successfully grown in the North Caucasus, in the Central and Lower Volga regions.

The founder of the station was Mikhail Mikhailovich Ulyanishchev, who has been engaged in selection since the 20s of the XX century. His goal was to breed new varieties of apricots that could endure the conditions of the middle lane. After the cold winter of 1927-28 M.M. Ulyanishchev was able to select two frost-resistant seedlings. The fruits collected from them were used to obtain new hybrids, including the Rattle variety.

When working on the apricot Rattle, the Bulgarian hybrid Silistra and the domestic variety Strong were used. Rattle got its name due to the free location of the bone. If you shake the fetus, you can hear the knock of the bone, like in a rattle.

Features

When choosing an apricot variety, its yield, self-fertility, resistance to drought, frost and disease are taken into account.

Drought resistance, winter resistance

Apricot Rattle is characterized by high winter hardiness of both the tree itself and flower buds. The tree is drought tolerant and able to tolerate lack of moisture.

Pollination, flowering period and ripening period

Variety Rattle is partially self-fertile. To get a high yield, it is recommended to plant a pollinator nearby. Flowering begins in May.

Fruit ripening occurs in mid-late periods. Harvested in late July – early August.

yield, fruiting

Before buying a seedling, it is important to know what year the Rattle apricot bears fruit. The first harvest is taken 4-5 years after planting.

Variety Pogrebok brings a high yield. Fruits are best harvested immediately after ripening, before they crumble.

Scope of fruits

Grade Rattle has a universal application. Its fruits are suitable for fresh consumption, making jam, jam, compote. According to reviews of apricot Rattle, fruits are best used to obtain dried apricots.

Disease and pest resistance

Apricot Rattle has an average resistance to diseases and pests. At high humidity, signs of clasterosporiosis appear on the leaves and fruits.

Advantages and disadvantages

Advantages of the apricot variety Rattle:

  • self-fertility;
  • large fruits;
  • stable yield;
  • good taste;
  • resistance to frost and drought.

Disadvantages of the Rattle variety:

  • susceptibility to fungal diseases;
  • takes a long time to bear fruit.

Features of landing

Planting an apricot Rattle is performed in spring or autumn. A suitable place is chosen for the tree and a landing pit is prepared.

Recommended dates

In the southern regions, the crop is planted in the middle or end of October, after leaf fall. Then the seedling will take root before the onset of winter.

In the northern area, it is better to transfer work to the spring, when the snow melts and the soil warms up. Apricot Rattle in the Moscow region and the middle lane can be planted both in spring and autumn. Before landing, they are guided by weather conditions.

Choosing the right place

A place for growing apricots must meet a number of conditions:

  • flat area or hill;
  • lack of strong winds;
  • drained soil;
  • natural light throughout the day.

The culture grows in light loamy soil. Acidic soils are lime before planting. Moisture should not accumulate on the site.

What crops can and cannot be planted next to an apricot

Apricot does not get along well next to fruit and berry crops. It is removed from the apple tree, plum, cherry, hazel and raspberry at a distance of more than 4 m.

It is best to allocate a separate area for growing various varieties of apricot. Under the trees, you can plant spring flowers (primroses, tulips, daffodils) or shade-loving perennials.

Selection and preparation of planting material

Rattle variety seedlings are purchased in nurseries. For planting, plants with an open root system are selected and its condition is assessed. Seedlings should not be damaged, mold or other defects.

Immediately before planting, a mash is prepared from water and clay, which has the consistency of sour cream. The roots of the seedling are lowered into the resulting mixture.

Landing algorithm

The order of planting apricot variety Rattle:

  1. A hole 60 cm in diameter and 70 cm deep is dug at the chosen place.
  2. Compost, 1 kg of wood ash and 0,5 kg of superphosphate are added to the fertile soil.
  3. The soil mixture is poured into a hole and left for 2-3 weeks to shrink.
  4. The prepared seedling is lowered into the hole.
  5. The roots of the plant are covered with earth and plentiful watering is carried out.

Culture aftercare

Growing apricot Rattle involves constant tree care: watering, fertilizing, pruning. The culture does not need frequent watering. Moisture is applied during the flowering period, if drought is established.

Top dressing of the Rattle variety is carried out in the spring after the snow melts. For the culture, a solution of mullein or ammonium nitrate is prepared. When flowering and fruit ripening, the tree is fed with potassium-phosphorus fertilizers.

Pruning shoots stimulates the fruiting of the Rattle variety. The tree has 6-7 skeletal branches. Weak, broken and frozen shoots are eliminated.

For the winter, apricots are watered abundantly and the roots are covered with humus. To protect against rodents, the tree trunk is covered with a special net.

Maria, 58 years old, Kursk
Four years ago I planted an apricot seedling of the Rattle variety. I bought plants in the Michurinsky nursery. During this time, the apricot grew to 4 m. Last year, the tree bloomed profusely and became a pollinator for the Triumph variety. I liked the fruits very much: tasty and large. Part of the harvest was used to obtain dried apricots.

Apricots are a tasty and healthy product. For planting, we chose proven varieties adapted to our climate. A two-year-old seedling of the Rattle variety was bought from a local nursery. Last year, the first crop was harvested from the tree. The fruits are sweet and large, well suited for drying.
