The green apple tree is not only a decoration of any site, but also annually pleases the gardener with tasty and healthy fruits. However, before you start planting this tree, you should decide on the apple variety.
Apple trees with green apples of summer varieties
The main feature of early varieties is the ability to harvest in mid-August. In addition, it is these apples that contain a greater amount of useful vitamins and minerals. But don’t forget about the downsides. These include a short shelf life and a quick discharge of fruits to the ground.
Green apple varieties are summer, autumn and winter
Among the summer varieties, the following should be highlighted:
- “Folding”. It tolerates frost perfectly. In addition, the variety is valued for its high yield. Apples should be picked directly from the tree, without waiting for the moment when they fall to the ground.
- Airlie Geneva. Fruiting already in the first year. But there is a significant drawback – the fruits deteriorate quickly.
- “Lungwort”. This variety is famous among gardeners for its unpretentiousness.
It should be remembered that all summer apples can be stored for no more than a month.
Autumn and winter varieties of green apple trees
Green apple trees are also available in autumn and winter varieties. This does not mean at all that some trees will bear fruit in frosts. Fruits of later varieties need to ripen after harvest. If this fruit is tasted in summer, it will turn out to be sour and astringent. However, after a certain period of time, the apple tastes great.
The most famous autumn species are:
- Antonovka. This variety is famous for the fruits of a special sweet and sour taste;
- “Champion”. The fruits are large in size. The main advantage of the variety is its high yield;
- “Autumn striped”. This type of plant has one feature: it bears fruit every two years;
- “Bogatyr”. The first crop can be harvested five years after planting. The variety is highly resistant to frost.
The fruits of these varieties can be stored for up to three months.
Popular winter varieties include:
- Granny Smith. Suitable only for areas with mild winters;
- “Moscow later”. Harvest can be expected in the fifth year after planting. Store well until spring;
- “Kutuzovets”. These apple trees withstand frost well and are famous for their high yields.
Usually apple trees of late varieties bear fruit at the end of September.
Green apples are considered the healthiest. Therefore, regardless of which variety of green apple you decide to grow on your site, your choice will be right.
