When Google launched the first Google Glasses in 2013, many thought it would be the beginning of a revolution in the electronics market. But something went wrong and went wrong with wearable gadgets.
In the early 20s, they were almost completely represented by all kinds of trackers and smart watches, but the glasses industry never took off. And there were many reasons for this – from legislative restrictions on devices that fall under the category of spyware, to the lack of technology for such a product. But everything can change when Apple introduces its smart glasses and the technology becomes convenient and simple for everyone.
Apple Glass release date
There is no exact date for the start of sales of Apple’s AR glasses right now. Rumors about them began to appear since the release of the analogue from Google. The only documented dates can be found through the publication of patents for the use of technologies.
For example, in the summer of 2020, Apple announced that they would use a modular system in augmented reality glasses – the arms and the lenses themselves could be changed. A few days before that, another patent appeared, but this time for controlling glasses with a look. This suggests that the development of smart glasses is really in full swing, and Apple is already solving applied problems.
If you believe the predictions of insiders, then the release of Apple Glasses should not be expected before 2022. This was confirmed by the authoritative Asian analyst Ming-Chi Kuo¹.
His “colleague” Jon Prosser previously predicted that smart glasses would be presented at the end of 2020, but added that the date could be postponed by a year due to the coronavirus. However, in 2021, the company did not present anything of the kind.
Prices for Apple Glasses
Smart glasses from Apple are a completely unique product. The only thing you can try to compare it with is Google Glasses, which failed on the mass market in 2014. But many years have passed since then, so it would be illogical to compare the prices of the two devices.
All the same John Prosser stated that the glasses would cost “only” $ 499² (plus the price of medical lenses, if required). Given the uniqueness of the points, it is hard to believe in this.
Specifications of Apple Glasses
The first step is to explain what type of device Apple generally makes. While using augmented reality technologies (Augmented Reality or AR), users see the usual picture of the world, on which those “augmented” parts are projected in real time. For example, automatic translation of foreign inscriptions or a description of the operation of an engine part. In the case of Apple, all calculations seem to take place on the iPhone or iPad, with which the glasses must be paired – otherwise, all the hardware and battery will have to be placed directly on the body of the glasses. The technical characteristics of Apple Glasses have not yet been announced, but you should not expect some kind of super-strong stuffing. The wearable device will become a kind of “display with sensors”.
There is information about what is in the glasses will use Lidar optics³, which does not take “real” photographs, but creates only the general outlines of objects. The solution is just perfect, given today’s aspirations to protect privacy and private information.
Insiders report that at least the first time in the Apple AR device will be used by two half-inch super-contrast displays from Sony with high response speed. Due to the last two factors, the image on the displays will organically fit into the picture that the user is outside of them⁴. It is still unknown how the glasses will look in general.
It is curious that users have already found a description of the AR function in iOS 13. In part of the STARTester code, they found a description of the control system for a device mounted on the head. According to some reports, the new AR interface may be called Starboard – it may be possible to control it with a glance⁵.
In iOS 14, they also did not forget about augmented reality technologies. A significant part of Apple’s presentation during WWDC 2021 was devoted to describing the operation of the updated Maps service. We already know for sure that with the help of machine learning technologies, users will be able to identify buildings that are directly in front of them or receive navigation tips. It looks quite impressive on the phone screen, but it will be much more convenient to use such things with augmented reality glasses.
