Supreme Medical Council
On behalf of the medical community, guided by the health condition of all inhabitants of our country, the Supreme Medical Council appeals to the Prime Minister to introduce a state of natural disaster in the territory of the Republic of Poland due to the spreading COVID-19 coronavirus epidemic.
Growing infection statistics show that our country is in the phase of a dynamic epidemic spreading. The next 30 days will prove to be crucial in fighting the virus. The introduction of a state of natural disaster for this period will expand the possibilities of applying legal measures limiting to the necessary minimum all manifestations of public, professional and social activity, which in the critical period of the epidemic may not only significantly increase the threat to the life and health of citizens, but also prolong the epidemic.
The experience of other countries, where the epidemic started earlier than in Poland, shows that in order to completely extinguish its outbreaks, restrictions on gatherings and prohibitions on organizing mass events should be maintained as long as new cases of the disease are discovered. In this state of affairs, the Polish State will not be able to provide its citizens with the safety of life and health during the eighth-grade exams, secondary school-leaving exams, and presidential elections, which should obviously lead to their postponement. The fight for the health and life of the citizens of our country during the epidemic requires sacrifices from many doctors and dentists, as well as support and responsible decisions in the name of defending the highest values for our existence.
There are many encouraging examples in the recent history of our country when political and party goals have given way to defending the life and health of citizens. We, the doctors, are appealing for this. Every day we fight for each patient and we know how many misfortunes can be prevented. Our medical duty requires us not only to heal, but also to prevent. Therefore, our appeal is a cry to avoid unnecessary exposures, suffering and losses.
