Apthin is a drug used to treat thrush. It has a disinfecting, antifungal and astringent effect, so it can be used during fungal infections. The main component of the Aphtin fluid is sodium tetraborate (borax), and 86% glycerol is additionally present in Aphtin. Despite its antifungal activity, Aphtin is not irritating to the skin and mucous membranes.
How does Aphtin work?
aphtin contains a safe amount of sodium tetraborate, so it can be used to treat thrush in children over 1 year of age, and in younger children after consulting a doctor. Moreover aphtin shows properties antiseptic, that is, disinfecting. Because boric acid and salts of boric acid (borax) are classified as cell poisons, they can lead to dehydration of the cell cytoplasm and, as a result, to disturbance of the electrolyte balance and acid-base balance. Therefore, it is very important to aphtin use only for a short time and at the same time take care of the electrolyte levels in the body, especially in children.
Sodium tetraborate contained in the liquid aphtin has too properties fungicidal and bactericidal, because it binds irreversibly to structural and functional proteins of fungal and bacterial cells, which can effectively destroy them and end the infection.
Thanks to the glycerol content of 86% in the composition of the preparation, boric acid it works only locally and is not absorbed through mucous membranes, which makes its use safer than the use of pure sodium tetroborate. The manufacturer of the drug Aphtin is the company Prolab.
