The classical style in interior design originated in the distant XNUMXth century. Then the palaces of kings and nobility were decorated in this way. And today it is a style of wealth and prosperity, elegance and luxury. It must be said right away that it is implemented only in spacious rooms of the correct (or almost correct) shape with high ceilings. The design of the apartment in a classic style is distinguished by the correct proportions, a small number of accessories, and restrained colors.
Character traits
The style is based on ancient Greek culture, the influence of which can be traced in most of the characteristic details – columns, pilasters, arches, rosettes, statues. Everything obeys certain rules, no chaos, everything is strictly planned, symmetrically arranged. Objects and decorative elements are proportional, made of natural expensive materials, expensive woods, marble, silk and velvet, well-dressed leather.
Everything is done in a restrained range. White, beige as a base, and against their background blue, green, terracotta, noble shades of red, some elements of black and, of course, gilding. Single complementary colors or accompanied by gold and black. No variegation and multicolor.
The floor is simply wooden from expensive wood species or parquet, and the parquet is decorative or palatial. Mosaics and panels with floral motifs from different types of wood. Marble floors with inlays and ornaments are acceptable but rarely used. As an alternative to marble, you can consider self-leveling floors that are similar in appearance to marble.
The ceiling rarely remains smooth. Traditionally, its division into squares framed with stucco.
If you pay tribute to modern traditions, they make modern multi-level ceilings. They can be made of drywall, or they can be combined with stretch ceilings. In any case, the designs are multi-layered and symmetrical.
Mirrors are used as an additional decorative element, sometimes on opposite walls. Mirrors can be imprinted with gold for greater effect, or used as mirror tiles.
When designing an apartment, do not forget about lighting. A massive chandelier with a large number of pendants is installed in the center of the room. Most often made of crystal. The rest of the lighting can be peripheral ceiling (recessed lights), made with the help of sconces and other wall lights.
You have probably already noticed that the furniture in the classic design is used in good quality, expensive. Simple lines, classic shapes, correct proportions. It is arranged symmetrically in strict order and harmony. There are no superfluous items, only the necessary, minimum accessories. The focus is on the quality of materials and finishes. Window decoration plays a significant role in creating an interior. Curtains in a classic style are made from heavy fabrics that create beautiful draperies. Lambrequins are suitable for this interior. They add extra splendor to the interior.
Now a little about planning. If you are just thinking about building a house or renovating an apartment and you like the classic style, then the layout with a central room from which you can get to all the others is most suitable. This layout is rare, but for this style it is the most preferable. The central room can be square or round (you remember that the shape of the rooms must be correct or almost correct). It can be considered a living room. The most suitable functional purpose for a walk-through room. All these components and create a classic. And now we will consider separately the features of the design of each room.
Hallway in classic style
A house or apartment starts with a door. In a classic interior, doors should also be classic, of good quality. From wood or metal is not so important, but the main focus is on quality characteristics. Choose the color of the rhinestone from those that will be present in the design, nothing should be accidental.
In the hallway, right from the threshold we get into the classics. Characteristic colors, high-quality materials, no unnecessary details.
As you can see, the style is very different. Over the centuries of existence, the classical design has acquired some more national features. Strict interiors in the English spirit with smooth lines in everything, furniture, accessories, decoration. There are more “French” options with curved furniture legs and floral motifs in the design. Finishing, in which Greek or Roman influence is visible, is popular – columns, sculptures, arches. So even “inside” the classics there is a sufficient variety of directions, allowing you to create a unique design of an apartment or house.
Classic in the living room
Upholstered furniture becomes the center of the composition in the living room. Dark or light, but definitely with expensive upholstery, it is usually grouped around a coffee table. The arrangement is symmetrical about the center of the table and, if possible, about the center of the room.
There is usually a TV in the living room. Most often it is located opposite the sofa. It is placed on a pedestal of a characteristic design, on the sides there may be cabinets with ceremonial dishes or other items, possibly collections of the owners.
In furniture and decoration, there are “national” trends that have already been described above. If you pay attention to the floor, wood is mainly used, moreover, expensive species. This is not necessarily parquet, maybe a good floorboard. But if parquet, then not with a geometric layout, but with complex shapes. The walls are painted, finished with decorative plaster or covered with wallpaper with a characteristic pattern resembling monograms.
Often in spacious living rooms with high ceilings, wallpaper is pasted in the form of a panel. Previously, they were covered with expensive fabrics with silver or gold threads, now they use high-quality wallpapers. They make frames from profiles with a characteristic pattern, inside which canvases are glued. Naturally, the quality of the finish must be excellent.
Window decoration is traditional for this style, heavy curtains with lambrequins and draperies. Often they are tied up, creating a more magnificent design. No less traditional and lighting – a chandelier in the center of the ceiling and side built-in or wall lights.
Bedroom decoration
The bedroom in this context is perhaps the most comfortable. Priority is given to beds. It is massive, with a high headboard – carved, upholstered in fabric or leather.
Here gilding can be found most often. The design, as a rule, is dominated by white and its shades, and gold blends perfectly with them, without creating a flashy contrast.
To diversify the decor of the walls, semi-columns are often made, and mirrors are an indispensable attribute of such premises. At the same time, cabinets are rarely placed, they try to make a dressing room so as not to burden the space with bulky furniture and not disturb harmony. Of the furniture, there may be a dressing table with a bench, bedside tables, a small chair or sofa. But at the same time, there should be a lot of free space. If the bedroom does not differ in volume, leave a minimum: a bed, a dressing table, bedside tables.
Kitchen
Although in the palaces the kitchen was in no way related to the main chambers, its design also has characteristic features of the style. These are all the same high-quality and expensive materials, the principle of necessary sufficiency in the selection of furniture and discreet colors.
The kitchen set is made of wood, can be painted in white, creamy or light beige. In this version, perhaps, gilding or small elements of additional color used in the rest of the design. Often there are headsets with natural wood color or slightly darker, for greater contrast. Focus on the texture of the wood. Here on the facades there can be whole paintings.
And even in the design of the kitchen, they try to arrange the furniture symmetrically. In any case, it is logical to place cabinets of different shapes – with closed and open shelves, glazing and without. Kitchens in this style should also be spacious and have large ceilings. In the center there should be a rather big chandelier, and also with pendants. So that there is not too much splendor, the walls and floor in the kitchen are plain. It is acceptable to use decorative plaster of soft colors.
These are all the basics that will come in handy when designing an apartment interior in a classic style.
