Apap in the form of drops and suspension. When can it be used?

Apap drops / suspension is a drug used in fever, mainly in the course of infectious diseases and pains of various etiologies (e.g. painful teething, postoperative or traumatic pain). The preparation is a non-opioid drug with analgesic and antipyretic properties. The active substance is paracetamol.

Apap drops / suspension – indications and dosage

Apap drops / suspension is a drug recommended for taking:

  1. in infectious diseases with fever,
  2. in pains of various etiologies: painful teething, post-operative and post-traumatic pains.

Drug dosage

Apap drops / suspension is for oral use. Do not exceed the recommended dose of the preparation.

  1. Orally: infants after 3 months of age and children. Usually 10-15 mg / kg body weight,
  2. if necessary, give every 4 h, max. 4 times / day.

Apap drops / suspension and contraindications

Contraindications to taking Apap drops / suspension are:

  1. allergy to any component of the drug,
  2. liver and kidney failure,
  3. taking MAO inhibitors in parallel or in the last 2 weeks,
  4. congenital deficiency of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and methaemoglobin reductase,
  5. use in infants up to 3 months of age.

Apap drops / suspension – warnings

  1. Do not take the drug for more than 3 days without consulting a doctor.
  2. Pregnant and breastfeeding women may take the drug only after consulting a doctor and when absolutely necessary.
  3. Do not exceed the recommended dose of Apap.
  4. In order to avoid overdose, it is recommended to check whether other taken preparations contain paracetamol.
  5. Taking caffeine enhances the analgesic effect of paracetamol.
  6. Patients with hepatic insufficiency, alcohol abuse and starvation are at increased risk of liver damage.
  7. People with renal, hepatic or bronchial asthma should take the drug with caution.
  8. Alcohol should not be consumed during treatment with the drug.
  9. Patients with fructose intolerance should not take this medicine because it contains sorbitol.
  10. An allergic reaction or an asthma attack (in people with asthma) may occur as this medicine contains sodium benzoate.

Apap drops / suspension

  1. Do not take the drug with other preparations containing paracetamol.
  2. The paracetamol contained in the drug increases the effects of anticoagulants (e.g. warfarin).
  3. Taking the drug simultaneously with rifampicin, isoniazid, antiepileptics, barbiturates, diflunisal, sulfinpyrazone or other drugs that induce liver microsomal enzymes increases the risk of liver damage.
  4. The simultaneous administration of MAO inhibitors with paracetamol may cause a state of agitation and high temperature.
  5. Paracetamol in combination with zivovudine causes neutropenia and a risk of liver damage.
  6. Drinking caffeine enhances the effects of paracetamol.

Apap drops / suspension – side effects

If the drug is used correctly, it does not cause side effects. However, there may be:

  1. nausea,
  2. vomiting,
  3. digestive disorders,
  4. allergic reactions: urticaria, erythema, rash, pigmentary purpura, anaphylactic shock,
  5. rare thrombocytopenia and agranulocytosis,
  6. liver damage (as a result of overdose),
  7. liver and kidney problems (long-term use).
