The diastolic medications help to eliminate gastrointestinal discomfort, abdominal pain, menstrual pain and gas. Preparations eliminate unpleasant ailments by affecting smooth muscles – causing them to relax. They relieve spasms of the digestive system, biliary and urinary tract, as well as the reproductive organs of women.
The most common ingredients of diastolic drugs are drotaverine in the form of hydrochloride and plant extracts, e.g. St. John’s wort, milk thistle, and mint.

Intestinal reliever medications
One of the properties of antispasmodics is their effect on the abdomen. Depending on the type of drug, its composition and specificity, they help to get rid of flatulence, menstrual pains and other ailments.
Abdominal pain is often caused by contraction of the smooth muscle in the digestive tract and the abdominal cavity. After taking medications, smooth muscles relax, thus eliminating various ailments. The action of the drug and faster relief is possible, among others through the release of gases, which is facilitated by diastolic preparations. A symptom of excess gases is abdominal tension.
The main treatment for intestinal ailments is drotaverine. It is a substance that increases the flow of calcium into the cells. The drug is available over the counter, usually in tablet form. It is also possible to administer the preparation intramuscularly or intravenously, but in this case only by a doctor or a person authorized to perform such procedures.
Renal antispasmodics
Reliever medications are used for kidney problems, such as kidney colic. This is a disease where urine outflow from the kidneys is blocked. The disorders are accompanied by severe pain in the area of the kidneys. In such cases, painkillers and antispasmodics are used to relieve pain. Patients with these ailments should use preparations based on papaverine, drotaverine or hyoscine (eg Vegantalgin H).

Children diastolic drugs
In children, diastolic medications are most often used for abdominal pain. Before using each medicine, read the leaflet to check if it is suitable for the child and in what dose. In addition to the preparations available in pharmacies, you can use herbs that show diastolic properties, e.g. chamomile and mint.

Popular over-the-counter diastolic drugs are safe for health and their use does not require immediate medical consultation. However, pregnant women should refrain from choosing diastolic medications on their own. Not every preparation safe for an adult, or even a child, will be safe for the fetus. Therefore, you should not use antispasmodics without medical consultation. Usually, diastolic drugs for pregnant women are recommended only in a situation of higher necessity.
