Anti-aging ingredients in cosmetics

Look at yourself in the mirror – and there will always be a reason for dissatisfaction. In adolescence, life is poisoned by acne and pimples, in 20-30 – not too plump lips, nose shape, dull complexion. But closer to 40, there are real reasons for concern – wrinkles, dry skin, loss of tone … Are there anti-aging components of cosmetics that can prevent or correct this?

Anti-aging components in cosmetics

Over the past 100 years, many discoveries have been made in cosmetology. The 30s of the XX century were marked by the appearance of the first anti-wrinkle cream with Vaseline. In the 60s, products based on the placenta and amino acids with isolated animal DNA appeared. In the 80s, scientists learned how to deliver active ingredients to the deep layers of the skin using nanocapsules, liposomes and niosomes. In the 90s we learned about peptides, alpha hydroxy acids (AHA) and hyaluronic acid. Vitamin C has experienced a rebirth – it has been proven that not only in the composition of tablets, but also in the composition of cosmetics, it does a lot of good and useful things. Let’s talk about these ingredients in more detail.

Peptides, hyaluronic acid and vitamin C are actively used in anti-aging products.

A natural humectant, this substance has a unique ability to bind moisture. One molecule of hyaluronic acid attracts 100 water molecules! Its other advantage, highly appreciated by cosmetologists, is multifunctionality.

  • Hyaluronic acid not only attracts and retains moisture (for which it received the name “molecular sponge”), but also creates a kind of protective film on the surface. The film does not allow moisture to evaporate, prevents its loss.

  • It activates the renewal processes, promotes the restoration of skin cells.

It is not surprising that now this component is included in every third cosmetic product!

Peptides

These are short fragments of proteins – a maximum of several tens of amino acids. Peptides perform a variety of functions, help restore the skin, strengthen its protective barrier, participate in the synthesis of collagen … About 60 of them are now used in cosmetics. What are they doing there?

  • Some peptides reduce the activity of facial muscles, have a lifting effect – their action is somewhat reminiscent of the action of Botox, the muscles seem to “freeze”.

  • Others stimulate collagen production.

  • Still others are struggling with hyperpigmentation, etc.

It is impossible to talk about peptides in general – they are very different and perform specific functions. The degree of their activity is also different. They say about peptide cosmetics that this is the cosmetics of the future, it has great potential.

Vitamin C

Unlike peptides, this is an old and proven fighter. A well-known antioxidant, vitamin C performs many functions:

  • protects the skin from photoaging;

  • stimulates the production of collagen;

  • improves the complexion;

  • gives the skin freshness and radiance.

Expert of the La Roche-Posay brand, dermatocosmetologist Alexander Prokofiev says that serums and creams with vitamin C can be used at any time of the day. But they must be mixed with other agents with care, because “vitamin C is incompatible with certain ingredients and can be destroyed under their influence. Ascorbic acid is not friendly, for example, with retinol and its derivatives, AHA acids, niacinamide, copper peptides. Cosmetics with these active ingredients are best used on different days. And vitamin C is afraid of the sun. Therefore, make sure that the cream with which you will “seal” the vitamin serum has SPF protection – or, when leaving the house, apply it additionally.
