Six human cases of anthrax have been confirmed in Croatia. Sick people, including two children, became infected from infected cattle. They are diagnosed with a mild cutaneous form of anthrax, which is treated with antibiotics. So far, 107 animals have died as a result of anthrax infection, according to reports. Croatian authorities ensure that the situation is under control and measures have been taken to stop the spread of the disease.

Cases of anthrax in Croatia

According to the latest reports, in Croatia there were six cases of anthrax infection in humans, including two children. The patients were diagnosed with the cutaneous form of the disease, which can be successfully treated with antibiotics. Doctors found no need for hospitalization in the patients.

Anthrax is a disease that can spread from animals to humans. According to the Croatian Ministry of Agriculture, in this case there was contact with infected cattle. The focus of the disease was animals from the Lonjsko Polje nature park, located southeast of Zagreb. 107 cows were killed by anthrax infection within two weeks.

Since there is free grazing in the area where anthrax infections have been detected, more carcasses of sick animals are likely to be discovered. The authorities ensure that the situation is under control. According to media reports, the necessary steps were taken to prevent the spread of the disease.

Spore forms of anthrax may remain in areas where diseased animals have grazed. They remain dormant in water or soil for up to several dozen years. They are activated when they reach the digestive system of other animals or under the influence of environmental factors such as droughts, heavy rainfall or floods.

What is anthrax and how is it transmitted?

Anthrax is a bacterial zoonotic disease that can become infected by humans through contact with sick animals, especially cattle, sheep, goats and horses. Wool, leather, or animal products, including milk and meat, can also be a source of pathogens. Depending on the route by which the anthrax bacilli enter the body, we can deal with its form:

  1. skin – it develops as a result of contact of bacteria with the skin, this form of infection is the most common, accompanied by symptoms such as black pimple and malignant swelling, as well as fever or chills;
  2. pulmonary – is the result of inhaling dust containing live anthrax bacteria or their spore forms, may lead to hemorrhage and tissue breakdown;
  3. intestinal – occurs as a result of eating food contaminated with anthrax, it is accompanied by severe abdominal pain, very high fever, bloody diarrhea and vomiting.
