The list of symptoms of Omicron infection grows longer. Recently, another ailment has been added to it, which may appear both during the infection and after it has ceased. The authors of a publication in the US National Library of Medicine (NLM), who noted its association with the coronavirus, urged doctors to remain vigilant, as this symptom is easy to overlook.
- Numerous scientific studies confirm that dizziness may be related to coronavirus infection
- This symptom is described by patients as a “spinning sensation” and not as a “feeling as if I were going to pass out”
- Dizziness occurs not only in the acute phase of infection, but also during recovery from COVID-19 and after recovery, as a symptom of long covid

Sick people feel “spinning” in their heads
According to patients’ reports, dizziness in COVID-19 is slightly different from the type of dizziness that occurs with other diseases or conditions. They are described as a “spinning feeling” and “disturbed sense of balance”, not feeling like fainting. Patients feel as if they are a bit off balance.
Interestingly, this symptom was noticed not only by patients who were in the course of COVID-19 infection (e.g. in its acute stage), but also by those who had already recovered from it (without experiencing other symptoms) and convalescents. Thus, it was indicated that dizziness may indicate that we were infected with the coronavirus at all, which is valuable information for people who did not confirm the infection with the test, as well as for those who did not know that they were infected (asymptomatic course).

This ailment also joins the list of long covid symptoms, i.e. the long tail of COVID-19 – a complex of symptoms that persist even several months after recovery.

Where does dizziness come from in the course of COVID-19?
Why might dizziness be a symptom of COVID-19? Experts explain that coronavirus infection can cause (like other respiratory diseases) inflammation of the sinuses and the inner ear. This has a direct impact on the vestibular system that the brain uses to control balance.
“If you develop an ear infection or an Eustachian tube that connects your ears to the back of your throat and becomes blocked, it can make you feel dizzy” – explains Dr. Hackensack Christine Greiss, director of the Concussion Program at JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute Meridian Health.
US health officials pointed out that dizziness, as a symptom of Omicron infection, occurs more and more often in patients. The authors of the NLM article even talk about “countless studies” proving the symptom is related to COVID-19.

Do not underestimate this symptom!
“We would like to emphasize that vertigo should not be taken lightly as it has been proven to be a noticeable clinical manifestation among COVID-19 patients,” the researchers wrote. And they added: “It is imperative that treating physicians remain vigilant, especially when dealing with non-specific symptoms such as dizziness as they can be easily overlooked.”
At the same time for patients who feel dizzy, experts advise that they move carefully and slowly, and when changing from a lying position to a sitting position, wait a moment (one to two minutes) before they rise so that the sense of balance does not get too hard «hit ». They also remind you: if this symptom lasts longer or gets worse, especially if you experience fainting, falls, ringing in your ears or hearing impairment, consult your doctor as soon as possible.

Other symptoms of Omikron infection
Dizziness is one of the less specific symptoms of an Omikron infection. Others include: night sweats, loss of appetite, pain in the middle back, and a strange rash (especially in children).
However, the most common symptoms of COVID-19 caused by the new variant are general fatigue, a scratchy throat or sore throat, stuffy or mild runny nose, headache, and muscle and joint pain. In the course of the infection, slightly elevated temperature and gastrointestinal symptoms may also appear. High fever and cough – symptoms characteristic of previous variants of SARS-CoV-2, incl. Deltas – occur much less frequently.
