Annunciation and other days when it is categorically impossible to plant and sow: folk signs

Today, few gardeners follow the advice of our ancestors. However, it is not recommended to completely forget them.

Russians have long been farmers in a country with a harsh and changeable climate. Therefore, they watched the weather, and passed the signs from generation to generation in order to get a good harvest.

Bans on planting seedlings were mainly associated with church holidays.

You can not plant and sow anything in Annunciation, which always falls on April 7, and in Whit Monday, which comes 51 days after Easter. The day itself is unfavorable for planting. Christ’s Resurrection, as well as February 15 – Candlemas, August 19 – Transformation, August 28 – Assumption and September 21 – Nativity of the Virgin.

These prohibitions were due to the fact that earlier people did not work on a holiday, but always went to church for solemn services.

It is also believed that you cannot sow plants on new moon и full moon… These days, vegetables do not receive the energy they need, so they will grow stunted or completely die.

Interestingly, potatoes, beets and carrots should not be planted on Palm weekbecause they won’t last long. And it is not recommended to sow radish until Trinity… In 2021, Trinity will be celebrated on Sunday, May 23.

Signs for a rich harvest

  • Cucumbers planted on June 5 are especially good for canning and pickling.

  • Peas are sown at dawn. It is possible on Holy Thursday and Saturday.

  • You cannot work in the garden on an empty stomach; you always need to go out to the beds well-fed. Otherwise, you will not wait for the harvest.

  • Carrots are soaked in the early morning and sown secretly, avoiding the attention of strangers.

  • Watermelons cannot be planted in boots. However, this is also inconvenient.

  • If you buy seedlings on the market, you do not need to show them even to those with whom you live together: let them admire them directly in the garden.

  • During the sowing season, they do not borrow money.

  • You cannot lend seeds until they themselves have sifted out, otherwise the plants themselves will not sprout well.

  • In order for potatoes to grow well, they should not be planted in cloudy or cloudy weather. You need to wait for a sunny day, when there are only small clouds in the sky.

  • Folk wisdom advises planting and sowing on women’s days. These include only two days a week – Wednesday and Friday.
