Sasha, 10 years old, chose Angela Nanetti’s book «My grandfather was a cherry»
“This book is written on behalf of the boy Tonino. He talks about his life and family. Especially about his grandfather, who was his best friend. In the summer before the first class, Tonino spent a whole month in his village. And so they had peace of mind. Every morning his grandfather made him eggnog for breakfast, and together they fished, worked in the garden, climbed the cherry tree, and everything went very well. But then a very sad thing happened: grandfather died. And they decided to build a road through his garden and cut down a cherry tree for this! Grandfather planted this tree on the day when his daughter, mother Tonino, was born. And grandfather once said that after death he would like to turn into this cherry. And now the mayor sent workers with an excavator to clear the place … I just could not read, I was so outraged. Isn’t it possible to detour the road? In order for the mayor to finally understand this, Tonino took and climbed a cherry! And sat there for several hours. He was terribly cold and hungry. But I saved the cherry. After all, it was the main memory of my grandfather. Grandfather, even when he was alive, said: «You do not die as long as someone loves you.» I think it’s true. And then, it’s still easier to live when you know that a loved one has turned into something than to imagine that he is no more at all.
