The fourth wave of coronavirus in Poland is accelerating. The number of occupied covid beds has exceeded a thousand since September 19. – Young people who are currently unvaccinated dominate in intensive care. We treat, for example, a 23-year-old man without any accompanying diseases – says prof. Mirosław Czuczwar, head of the Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Therapy, SPSK1 in Lublin.

Coronavirus in Poland. In hospitals, mostly young, unvaccinated

Prof. Czuczwar noted that the intensive care unit currently has seven seriously ill patients with COVID-19 who require respiratory therapy due to the fact that the virus has wreaked havoc on their lungs. «Right now, COVID-19 patients dominate the intensive care unit. They are unvaccinated young people. The average age dropped to 40. At the moment, for example, we are treating a 23-year-old man without any accompanying diseases ”- emphasized the specialist in anaesthesiology and intensive care.

In an interview with PAP, he indicated that the current increase in the incidence began in mid-August. The first patient that staff remembered was an infected man in his 40s who had returned from the UK. «He and his relatives had enough extreme views. When I talked to him, he explained that it was a big fake “and in England no one believes in a pandemic, and he just has a cold. He had severe respiratory failure, fought for every breath and practically tried to convince us to the end that we were taking part in some kind of staging or manipulation. He died despite the fact that medicine had given him everything it had to offer. It was our first patient in such a serious condition who consciously avoided vaccinations “- said Prof. Miroslaw Czuczwar.

In his opinion, the views of people contesting the pandemic result, among other things, from the lack of a clear position of many circles, including medical ones, because patients reach many ambiguous opinions. As he pointed out, the enormous fuel for those who doubt vaccinations is often the scientists, doctors and decision-makers themselves, who “talk too hastily about the results of research or conducted observations before they are finally confirmed.”

Not all doctors are convinced of vaccination

According to prof. Czuczwara, not all doctors, nurses, paramedics and pharmacists are convinced of vaccination. «This seems to me to be a huge problem for our communities. Often, patients say that their doctor has advised them to better withhold vaccination because of potential side effects. Recently, I heard that you did not get vaccinated, because someone allegedly told him that vaccination may impair fertility “- indicated the specialist in anesthesiology and intensive care.

He also emphasized that people who contest the achievements of science and medicine have been tolerated in the public space for too long. «I myself get all kinds of e-mails, letters, phone calls from people who sign their names and I know that they do not have any medical training to comment on these topics. Most often they refer to extreme opinions that the pandemic is a fabrication and all these activities are aimed at the destruction of societies. I recently got an email saying that the current pandemic is the result of a worldwide conspiracy similar to the swine and avian flu epidemics of the past. It is really difficult to argue with such arguments, ‘said prof. Czuczwar.

The anesthesiologist from Lublin pointed out that we have received from the world science community a quick, simple and safe way to deal with a pandemic, i.e. vaccinations. “I don’t know why half of the population in my country decided to reject this gift, claiming it was unnecessary or unproven. I’m afraid we got to the wall because those who wanted to get vaccinated have already done it and the rest will not get vaccinated no matter what we do. Organizing mobile vaccination points, promotional campaigns in the media – unfortunately, all this goes to a void, perhaps because vaccine opponents are not interested in a substantive discussion, but in heating up the conflict »- he added.

Coronavirus is not a cold

Prof. Czuczwar explained in an interview with PAP that SARS-CoV-2 infection is not an ordinary common cold, as anti-vaccineists believe. This is evidenced by the survival statistics in the treatment of extracorporeal blood oxygenation, the so-called ECMO. “There were high hopes for ECMO treatment at the start of the pandemic, as we had very good results in treating influenza pneumonia. The flu survival rate was 65-70%, and we now have a mortality rate for COVID-19 at this level. The SARS-CoV-2 virus is more dangerous, besides it is a new virus, so the immune system did not have as much time – as in the case of influenza – to get used to it ”- noted the head of the Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Therapy at SPSK1.

  1. A new type of allergy? Hairdressers report it in people after COVID-19

When asked when the coronavirus pandemic will end, he replied that epidemics typically last around two years, but only if the public is vaccinated. «Today we know that this is an overly optimistic approach, because only half of Poles are vaccinated. What saves us in a sense is the fact that some patients – despite obvious symptoms of infection – did not report to the health service. Thus, we have an underestimated population of healers who possess immunity. The only problem is that we do not know how long it will last “- emphasized prof. Miroslaw Czuczwar.
