Anesthesiologist

An anesthesiologist is a doctor whose work is often underappreciated. For most it remains anonymous. Usually we think that his only effort is to administer anesthesia before surgery. It is worth considering whether it is really “only” or “until”? An anaesthesiologist is sometimes referred to by doctors as “deputy guardian angel” – why?

The anaesthesiologist bears a great responsibility for the patient’s life and health. His job is not only about administering anesthesia. Of course, the anesthesiologist performs anesthesia, but he also monitors the patient’s safety during the operation and then wakes him up. However, this is not the end of his competences.

It is worth knowing that the anesthesiologist ensures that all vital functions of the patient are secured. Before each operation, it collects detailed information about the patient’s health, medications, other chronic diseases or previous operations.

It is also important whether the patient is allergic to anything. These consultations are needed so that the anesthetist can assess the risk of anesthesia and implement the most appropriate perioperative anesthetic management. Therefore, it plays an extremely important role in the operating room. It prepares for the procedure and allows the doctors performing the procedure to concentrate on the operating field. His competences also extend beyond the operating room.

An anaesthesiologist is on duty in the intensive care unit. He has competences that allow him to take care of patients in serious condition – when there is a threat to life or multi-organ failure, e.g. after a traffic accident. He also deals with coma patients. It is also a specialist in pain management. It helps, among others patients suffering from neoplastic diseases, who very often struggle with enormous pain that does not allow them to function normally. The anesthesiologist may also be a member of the emergency medical service.

Empathy, understanding, patience and resistance to stress are extremely important for every doctor. The sense of responsibility for another person and the ability to focus and concentrate are also one of the most important features that a good anesthesiologist should have. It is a doctor who accompanies the patient at every stage of his surgical treatment.

Before the procedure, he conducts an interview to implement the best anesthesiological treatment, during the operation – he watches over life processes, and after the procedure, we can meet him in the recovery room where the patient is. This doctor helps the patient to recover, fights pain and cares about his psychological comfort. In addition, he answers all questions and talks about concerns related to the treatment, i.e. in conclusion – he cares for the safety and well-being of the patient and his relatives. The anaesthesiologist must take into account that any ill-considered, too quick decision may have huge consequences.

It should be borne in mind that obtaining the right to the profession does not end after six years of study. The future anesthesiologist will have 6 years of specialization, after which he will be able to practice his profession as an expert and professional. It is important for the doctor to constantly learn, learn about the latest drugs and technologies used in medicine.
