Androgyny is a personality trait of people who successfully combine both traditionally male and traditionally female psychological qualities.

Psychological differences between men and women — upbringing or biology

Numerous studies have shown that psychological differences between men and women arise and are formed more from the characteristics of the family upbringing of boys and girls, as well as from social influences, rather than from biological differences between the sexes.

Other studies no less convincingly show that the psychological differences between men and women have genetic, biological roots. See →

Independence of male and female qualities

Alisa Krylova — Mrs. Russia 2010, Mrs. World. Simultaneously owner of a business, production of armored vehicles. So what is her gender?

The concept of masculine and feminine traits has long been based on the model of one continuum, with masculine qualities at one end and feminine qualities at the other: the more masculine, the less feminine, and vice versa. Later it was found that masculine (masculine) and feminine (feminine) qualities are independent and can only be located on two separate, non-overlapping continuums.

Most tests that measure femininity, masculinity, and androgyny are based on this principle. Based on these tests, each person falls into one of four groups:

  1. to masculine individuals — with traditionally expressed masculine qualities, such as ambition, determination, etc.;
  2. to feminine individuals, with pronounced feminine qualities, such as affectivity, gentleness, etc.;
  3. to androgynes, combining both traditionally feminine and traditionally masculine traits;
  4. to people of an indefinite psychological gender identity who do not have pronounced masculine or feminine features.

Studies show that androgyny is an important psychological characteristic of a person, which determines the ability to change one’s behavior depending on the situation: it contributes to the formation of resistance to stress, helps in achieving success in various areas of life.

The development of research on the problems of psychological gender, the development of such concepts as the scheme of sex, the significance of sexual identity for the individual and others, are aimed at finding possible ways for the formation of not only masculinity and femininity, but also androgyny
