“Our teenager Gena is completely different — black and rather asocial. It was born out of my desire to find an equivalent to the very concept of «other», expressive enough for cinema. And we found this one, probably, and rude — «Negro in the snow.» For me, he is not just a lonely black boy in Russia, he is an image of the loneliness of a person in the world, loneliness in making decisions, loneliness in death. Philosophical loneliness, if you like. And, if the viewer after the film feels our black boy as their own, I will consider that I have told everything about loneliness. In the film, one character says: “I myself am a racist, but you will answer me with your head for this Negro!” What is important is not political correctness, it is important to feel that the other is as lonely as you are. By the way, the boy who played Gena lives in Korolev near Moscow, a typical «dude near Moscow», although he is the son of refugees from the Congo. And his father is a cook in an Azerbaijani restaurant. And that’s all — also Russia.
