Prof. Zbigniew Górka. He was an outstanding surgeon and participant in the Warsaw Uprising. He is the founder of the Silesian Surgical School, a pioneer of pancreatic surgery. People who worked with him recalled him as a wonderful man. He was a role model for the staff.

Curriculum vitae
Prof. Zygmunt Górka was born on July 19, 1927 in Poznań in a family with medical traditions. His father was a surgeon, mother – a dermatologist. He took part in the Warsaw Uprising. In 1945, he passed his high school diploma, and in 1952 he was awarded a medical diploma. He studied at the Faculty of Medicine of the Jagiellonian University in Krakow. He chaired the Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery at the Central Clinical Hospital in Katowice Ligota for 23 years, from 1974.
He was a long-term regional consultant for general surgery and an honorary doctorate of the Medical University of Silesia in Katowice. He was awarded, inter alia, The Cross of the Home Army, the Partisan Cross and the Commander’s and Knight’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta.
