An investigation into the death of a 39-year-old doctor is underway. «Why did he work so much?»

The Lower Silesian prosecutor’s office is investigating the manslaughter of an anesthesiologist from Wałbrzych. The 39-year-old doctor died at his home on Sunday. The thread of overwork is examined. Dr Leszek Pabis worked 96 hours a week.

– In connection with the disclosure of the body of a young person, because the 39-year-old is considered to be such, deceased in unexplained circumstances, the prosecutor carried out an inspection, ordered the preservation of traces and evidence that may be relevant to the proceedings – Marcin Witkowski from the district prosecutor’s office said to Gazeta Wyborcza in Wałbrzych.

Investigators ordered an autopsy, which, however, did not explain the cause of death. We still have to wait for additional results of toxicological and histopathological tests.

The Ministry of Health is also interested in the matter, which announced an inspection at the facility. – With the help of our inspection services we will look at this case. I would not like to prejudge at the moment, when we are just a moment after this tragedy, because this is what you have to call it, and decide what was the cause. We will investigate this matter and address it, admitted Adam Niedzielski, Minister of Health.

Professionals work 400 hours a month

The 39-year-old anesthesiologist Dr. Leszek Pabis died at home from Sunday to Monday. He was an employee of the Specialist Hospital of Alfred Sokołowski. According to the Lower Silesian Marshal’s Office, the medic worked in the facility for 96 hours in the week preceding his death. The doctor was employed under a civil law contract, which is not regulated by the provisions on the daily or weekly standard. Such a number is nothing unusual in a hospital in Wałbrzych, according to information that reached the media. According to the portal polsatnews.pl, there are specialists who work approx. 400 hours. a month. The average working hours per month for the medics of this facility is to be approx. 250 hours – reports Polsat News.

According to the social media profile of the hospital, only on July 2 there were three vacancies among internists and surgeons. This is also confirmed by the hospital staff in an interview with Gazeta Wałbrzyska.

«He was our colleague and he worked hard»

– The situation is dramatic – the staff shortages are huge, anesthesiologists alone need at least five at this point. After Leszek’s death, already six. Why did he work so much? Because an anesthesiologist is needed in almost every ward. Either he stayed at work or some of the patients could not have had the surgeries performed – explains his colleague in an interview with “Dziennik”.

All these reports are confirmed by the reports of Gazeta Wyborcza, which informs that currently there are three anaesthesiologists at the facility from the Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care is on vacation. – There is a lot more work. We take care of patients. The man, the doctor, has died. He was our friend and he worked hard – says a doctor from the close circle of the deceased “Wyborcza”.

The hospital itself does not want to comment on the matter and sends it to the Marshal’s Office of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship, which supervises the facility. We asked local government officials, incl. about staffing problems of the facility.

– In the Specialist Hospital of Dr. Alfred Sokołowski employs 253 doctors in Wałbrzych. Currently, 16 doctors are employed in the Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care. There are a total of 69 vacancies among the doctors, including 6 vacancies for anesthesiologists, explains Aleksandra Sopuch from the Marshal’s Office of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship in an interview with Onet.
