An innovative bone lengthening operation performed in a Krakow hospital

In the specialist hospital of Stefan Żeromski in Krakow, an innovative bone lengthening procedure was performed using a magnetic field. Thanks to it, the 27-year-old patient will be able to function normally. The woman suffers from congenital fragility of bones and has waited for help for many years. This is the first such operation in Krakow.

The bone lengthening procedure using a magnetic field was performed using a metal nail implanted into the patient’s femur. Before the operation, the difference in the length of the patient’s limbs was 14 cm. This made it impossible to walk and function normally. The metal nail was brought from the United States after the hospital. Żeromski obtained approval for its purchase in the Małopolska branch of the National Health Fund. The implant cost PLN 16.

A special, very thin nail is electromagnetically controlled and enables bone stabilization. The patient is constantly under the supervision of doctors, but as professor Julian Dutka orthopaedist says, so far the results are very good. The woman admitted that she had been waiting for such an operation for many years. In her case, not all methods were indicated due to the inherent fragility of the bones. Now the bone has been lengthened and given a chance to function normally.

The patient underwent surgery in July. Since then, it has been possible to extend the bone by as much as 3 cm. As the woman says, every millimeter is a great success for her. The treatment will take time, but everything is well on its way.
