An injection for a small child: how to do it yourself? Video
Any prescription of injections means the severity of the situation and the complexity of the disease, nevertheless, children have to do injections quite often. There are many reasons for this, one of which is complications after the disease. In inpatient care, injections are common, but it happens that the child can stay at home if there is an opportunity to give him an injection. In addition, injections can relieve acute conditions, including extremely high fever.
Injections are made not only in the ass – depending on the purpose and method of administration, intravenous, intramuscular, subcutaneous injections are distinguished. Drugs are administered subcutaneously when there is no need to achieve an instant effect or when it is necessary for the drug to act for a long time. For example, most childhood vaccinations are done this way.
Intravenous administration of the drug is carried out when an instantaneous effect of the substance is required
This injection requires strict adherence to the rules of conduct, it is technically difficult, therefore, intravenous injection and the setting of a dropper are the lot of a medical worker exclusively.
Intramuscular injection is another matter. It is in this way that the vast majority of injections are carried out. There are several favorable places for intramuscular injections: thigh, buttocks, shoulder. The buttocks are preferred.
How to give an intramuscular injection to a child
When making an injection to a child on your own, it is important to know where you can inject, and exactly follow the sequence of actions when carrying out the manipulation.
You will need:
- drug ampoule
- syringe for injection
- sterile cotton wool
- alcohol
Choose a syringe with the thinnest possible needle, which will make the injection less painful. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and wipe with a sterile tissue. Massage the baby’s buttock with massage movements.
Open the medicine bottle with cotton wool soaked in alcohol and open a disposable injection syringe. Make sure that the syringe plunger is pushed all the way down, that is, there is no air in it. Draw a little more medicine into the syringe than necessary. Holding the syringe vertically, with the needle up, release the air formed inside the syringe and the excess amount of the drug.
The success of the manipulation largely depends on the behavior of the child, because it is difficult to keep a frightened, quirky baby. Therefore, it is important to prepare the child for the injection, to negotiate with him
Place the baby on your knees with your stomach down or on a flat surface. It is important that at the time of insertion of the needle, the baby does not wriggle or twitch. It is better if you have an assistant – another adult who will help to gently fix the little patient in a stable position.
Locate the injection site and wipe it clean with rubbing alcohol. The injection should be placed in the outer upper lobe of the buttock, where there are no vessels and nerves that cannot be touched. Insert the needle gently at right angles to the buttock.
After inserting the syringe, pull out the plunger slightly. If suddenly the medicine begins to enter the bloodstream, you have entered an artery, and the injection site should be changed. If there is no blood, slowly inject the medicine. After injecting the correct dose, remove the needle from the muscle and treat the injection site with alcohol.
