The town of Woodbridge in the northeastern part of the United States is struggling with a mysterious wave of a rare brain tumor. It has already been diagnosed in 115 people. Apart from illness, they have one more thing in common: they were all students or employees of Colonia High School. The case became famous thanks to one of the patients – Al Lupiano. An investigation into the “brain tumor epidemic”, as reported in the media, is ongoing. Finally, a certain hypothesis emerged.

  1. Both malignant and benign lesions have been diagnosed in humans
  2. Al Lupiano, a graduate of Colonia High School, drew attention to the disturbing phenomenon. When he was 27, he was diagnosed with a neuroma of the auditory nerve. Tumors also occurred in his wife and sister (she died in March this year)
  3. People who did not attend Colonia High School, but live nearby, also report to the man. “Lots of people call me saying … I live a mile away and we call our neighborhood the avenue of cancer”
  4. According to Lupiano, the “cancer epidemic” could be linked to a nearby facility where uranium was once stored. The man is waiting impatiently for the test results

Three cases of rare brain tumors in one family

Al Lupiano was the first to notice disturbing things happening in the town of Woodbridge. He himself is an environmental scientist and a graduate of Colonia High School in Woodbridge. He graduated from school in 1989, and 10 years later he was diagnosed with a rare primary brain tumor (that is, not a metastasis). It was an auditory neuroma. The man was then 27 years old. «My oncologist was amazed that someone my age had such a large tumor. These tumors usually grow at a rate of 1 mm per year … Mine was 3,6 cm. So it seemed that it was growing at an unprecedented pace »- said Lupiano. But that was just the beginning.

Rare brain tumors were also diagnosed in a sister (glioblastoma multiforme) and a male wife (acoustic neuroma / neuroblastoma). The women were also graduates of Colonia High School. “On the same day my sister was diagnosed (August 2021), I received the devastating news that my wife Michele also had a very large (3 cm) and very rare brain tumor,” remembers Lupiano. All three of them developed lesions on the left side of the brain. Unfortunately, in March this year, the man’s sister died. She was 44 years old.

Following his sister’s death, Lupiano wrote a Facebook post and an article in the local newspaper asking people in the area to help report cases of brain tumors. «This is not polluted water. It’s not air. It’s not something in the soil. (…) There is basically one medically confirmed cause of rare brain tumors, such as ours – radiation, »he wrote.

The response to the man’s appeal was surprising, as were the conclusions that emerged.

117 people with primary brain tumors and another 70 with rare tumors

“When I started doing this, I quickly gathered 15 of our classmates with rare brain tumors,” he told NewsNation. – (…) And now we have 117 people with primary brain tumors and another 70 with very rare cancers ». The vast majority of these people graduated from school in 1975-2000, but there is also one case from 2014. In addition to primary brain tumors, including cancerous ones such as glioblastoma, there are also cases of hemangioma and meningiomas.

“Although we have not yet determined whether there is any contamination, the only connection is that they all have spent a considerable amount of time in the same school,” wrote Lupiano in his post. Concerned people who did not attend Colonia High School, but live nearby, also come to the man. “Lots of people are calling me saying, listen, I didn’t go to high school, but I live a mile away and we call our neighborhood the avenue of cancer,” admitted Fox News.

Al Lupiano’s discoveries sparked a panic at Colonia High School, which still remains open. Currently, it is attended by approx. 1,3 thousand. students. Woodbridge Mayor John McCormac also admits that the situation is “worrying because there are so many people with cancer – malignant or benign, and it is serious”. The mayor contacted the state’s Department of Health, Department of the Environment, and the Federal Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry.

What is causing the “cancer epidemic”? There is some suspicion

In CBS New York, Mayor Woodbridge noted that the school, which was built in 1967, was built on “virgin soil”, in the woods. «The first thing there was high school, so there was probably nothing in the ground at that time. The only thing that could potentially happen was the filling that was used during the construction. We don’t have any records from 55 years ago ».

Al Lupiano, however, has some suspicions. In his opinion, the “cancer epidemic” may be related to a nearby facility where radioactive uranium used to be stored. It is located about 20 km from the Middlesex Sampling Plant school, where uranium ore was crushed, dried and stored for atomic bombs.

Lupiano says some of the contaminated soil was removed from the site following its closure in 1967 – the same year the Colonia High School was built. The man does not rule out that part of the land may somehow end up on the school grounds. Radiological examinations have recently been completed. Lupiano “eagerly awaits the results”. «I will not rest until I find the answer. I will discover the truth, I promised my sister this »declares the man.
