Nightmares at night as an early symptom of parkinson’s
Researchers at the University of Birmingham say that when mature people begin to experience nightmares, their risk of developing Parkinson’s disease increases. The data, published in the journal eClinicalMedicine, suggested that older men, who frequently had bad dreams, were twice as likely to develop the condition. Lead author of this study, Dr. Abidemi Otaiku, advises that mature adults pay special attention to what they dream about. If there is a sudden change and we have nightmares, we should consult our physician.

The research team came to these conclusions after looking at data from the United States. They concerned 3,8 thous. older men and covered the period of 12 years. Scientists say dreams can reveal key information about the health of the brain and its structure. Once this link has been identified, the next step is to try to pinpoint the biological causes of the changes in sleep.
Dr Katherine Fletcher from the UK says sleep analysis can help predict who will develop Parkinson’s in the near future. «Previous research has shown that REM sleep phase disturbance is associated with a higher risk of Parkinson’s disease. It is estimated that over 70 percent. people with this problem will develop this disease »- says the expert.
It should be noted, however, that while dreams may be an early indicator of Parkinson’s disease, they are not necessarily a symptom of Parkinson’s disease.
