Ammania bonsai: content
The plant is prized for its slow growth. This allows it to be used in complex compositions. It is usually grown in the foreground.
Asia is considered the birthplace of Ammania. It actively develops in rice fields under conditions of high humidity. This annual belongs to the Derbennikov family. Long stems develop rapidly in fresh water and reach the surface.
In an aquarium, the plant does not exceed 50 cm in height. Its stems can be vertical or grow horizontally to create a creeping carpet. Its decorative properties are given by variegated foliage. The lower leaves are colored bright green, and the upper leaves a deep purple. The leaf plate is dense. Its length is 2-3 cm. The elongated shape makes it look like an egg. There are seals on the edges.
During the flowering period, small flowers form in the leaf axils. Their shape is close to triangular, and the petals are painted in a delicate pink color.
Ammania can be propagated by the seeds produced by flowers. But it is more efficient to propagate it by cuttings. A fresh water aquarium is suitable for its growth. The stems of the plant are easily damaged, so do not plant it next to large fish.
When comfortable conditions are created, the plant develops rapidly. It tolerates typical water conditions well. For its growth, it is necessary to provide:
- Quality water – the plant prefers purified soft water. Better to provide it with neutral acidity. The pH level should not exceed 8 units.
- Medium temperature – the water in the aquarium should not be too cold or hot. The optimal temperature regime for a plant is 20-25 degrees. Avoid sudden temperature changes. It is necessary to maintain it at a stable level.
- Soil – fine sandy soil is best. It should be lightweight. For fast rooting, it is required to install a nutritious substrate. It will provide the roots with access to iron and other nutrients for active growth.
- Lighting – The plant needs a full spectrum and a lot of light. Lack of illumination leads to a change in the color of the foliage. She becomes pale and nondescript.
- Carbon dioxide will enhance growth and thicken foliage.
In order for the plant to develop actively, top dressing can be applied. Phosphates and nitrates are used as fertilizers.
The dense foliage of Ammania is used in aquarium design in complex compositions or alone. With its help, you can create an island or decorate decorative stones.
