Amitriptyline is a drug from the group of tricyclic antidepressants that has a sedative and anxiolytic effect.

Amitriptyline – action

The full therapeutic effect is observed after several days of use. It works by inhibiting the uptake of norepinephrine and serotonin by neurons of the central nervous system. Amitriptyline shows a balanced effect on the uptake of both compounds. It has a strong cholinolytic effect both in the central nervous system and in the periphery (in other tissues and organs). The cholinolytic effect includes, inter alia: dilation of the pupils, bronchodilation, slowing of intestinal peristalsis, decreased secretion of glands, increase in body temperature, stimulation of the central nervous system.

Amitriptyline – application

The effects of using the preparation may appear only after a few weeks of treatment, sometimes this time is longer. The patient should remain under strict medical supervision until his health improves. Other psychiatric disorders in which amitriptyline is prescribed may also be associated with an increased risk of suicidal behavior. Moreover, these conditions may coexist with major depressive disorders. People treated with this preparation for diseases other than depression, as well as people after attempted suicides and those who show a significant degree of suicidal tendency before starting treatment, should be closely monitored by a doctor.

Amitriptyline – contraindications

Contraindications to the use of the preparation are recent myocardial infarction, atrioventricular conduction disturbances, arrhythmias, angina pectoris, manic agitation, severe liver failure, porphyria, breastfeeding, age below 16 years.
