Americano cocktail history
This is one of the oldest cocktails, the recipe of which has come down to us unchanged. Its authorship is attributed to the bartender Gaspard Campari, who was the first to mix Campari and red vermouth with soda back in the 1860s.
Initially, the drink was called “Torino – Milan”, after the names of the cities where the main ingredients of the cocktail were produced.
Campari bitter was made in Milan, and Cinzano red vermouth was made in northern Italy, in Turin. It is noteworthy that the cocktail was served only in Italian bars, and became known in the USA much later.
According to legend, the cocktail owes its name change to the same bartender Gaspard. One day he noticed a group of American tourists in his bar, and in order to express his respect to the guests who were praising Torino-Milan with might and main, he told them that the cocktail was called Americano. This name, taken to the USA, became widespread there, and the cocktail became known to the whole world under a new name.
According to another version, the drink became so called from the word “amaro” – bitter in Italian. The cocktail gained worldwide fame thanks to the James Bond books – it is the American super spy who orders the first in the work of Ian Fleming.
