The European Center for Comprehensive Treatment of Hernia has been established at the Szpital na Klinach in Krakow. The center deals with the surgical treatment of hernias using minimally invasive methods such as laparoscopy and robotic surgery, which are particularly useful in the treatment of complicated recurrent hernias (after previous operations) and as an alternative to traditional “open” operations requiring massive incisions. The center is accredited by the prestigious American organization International Hernia Collaboration and permanently cooperates with the best European and American clinics.

The European Center for Comprehensive Hernia Treatment at Szpital na Klinach combines the specialist knowledge of surgeons – operators with many years of experience and doctors of other specialties, such as: internal medicine, plastic surgery or wound treatment, to ensure safe and comprehensive care for patients. – In our center we work on the basis of a care model based on value for the patient.
Based on the best global standards, we carefully monitor our work to constantly improve the care we provide. I am proud that we are launching another competence center offering comprehensive treatment solutions based on the latest technologies, including surgical robotics. – says Joanna Szyman, president of the management board of the NEO Hospital Group.
The use of minimally invasive methods, including robotic treatments in the treatment of hernias, allows for the reduction of pain, a satisfactory cosmetic effect and minimizing the risk of wound infection, and also allows for a shorter convalescence period and faster return to regular life and work activity.
The newest surgical technique is an operation with the use of a surgical robot. Surgical instruments are miniaturized and, thanks to the use of advanced technology, have a very large range of motion, much greater than human hands. In some cases, robotic surgery is the only method of minimally invasive surgery, such as hernias that require suturing the inner layers of the abdominal wall.
An example of such a hernia is a hernia resulting from pregnancy, where a large defect between the muscles of the abdominal wall requires stitching and placing a special reinforcing mesh. Due to the virtually unlimited freedom of movement of the robotic tools, the surgeon can suture the muscles from the inside, which is extremely difficult laparoscopically and usually requires open surgery. Thousands of women struggle with this problem and often choose not to undergo surgery for fear of major open surgery. – says prof. Tomasz Rogula General Surgeon, Clinical Director of NEO Hospital.
The use of a surgical robot also increases the durability of the operation and reduces the risk of hernia recurrence.
Patients of the European Center for Comprehensive Hernia Treatment have at their disposal a dedicated, properly trained person – an Individual Patient Caregiver, who helps in coordinating the entire treatment process as well as arranging convenient dates of examinations and consultations.
Types of hernias that can be reported to the center:
- hiatal hernia: sliding and peresophageal with full diagnosis and treatment of gastroesophageal reflux
- hernias in scars from previous operations
- inguinal hernias: simple and oblique, primary and recurrent, after previous operations
- periostomy hernias
- sports hernias: manifested by pain in the groin area in patients who play sports
- umbilical hernias
- abdominal hernias after previous procedures, pregnancies and cesarean sections
- hernia of the white line (abdominal rectus muscle stretch).
