Ambroxol Aflofarm – indications, dosage, contraindications, side effects

Ambroxol Aflofarm is a drug used as an adjunct in acute and chronic respiratory diseases with abnormal secretion and difficult expectoration of bronchial secretions (e.g. emphysema, bronchial asthma, bronchiectasis, cystic fibrosis, bronchitis, pneumonia, laryngitis) and in inflammation of the larynx, nose, throat and sinuses.

Ambroxol Aflofarm – indications and dosage

Ambroxol Aflofarm is a syrup recommended as an aid in:

  1. pulmonary emphysema
  2. bronchial asthma,
  3. bronchiectasis,
  4. cystic fibrosis,
  5. bronchitis,
  6. pneumonia
  7. laryngitis bronchitis,
  8. in inflammation of the larynx, nose, throat and sinuses.

The drug facilitates:

  1. rehabilitation in the pre- and postoperative period,
  2. expectoration prior to bronchographic examination.

Drug dosage

Ambroxol Aflofarm is a syrup intended for oral use. Take the medicine before the morning and noon meals. For treatments lasting more than 14 days, the dose should be halved.

  1. Adults and children after 12 years of age 30-60 mg twice / day.
  2. Kids. 6.-12. 7,5 mg 2-3 times / day
  3. Children 3-5. 7,5 mg three times / day
  4. Children up to 2 years of age 7,5 mg twice / day.

Ambroxol Aflofarm and contraindications

A contraindication to taking Ambroxol Aflofarm is an allergy to any component of the preparation.

Ambroxol Aflofarm – warnings

  1. Patients with gastric or duodenal ulcers should take the drug with caution.
  2. The dose should be reduced or the time between doses should be extended in patients with renal insufficiency.
  3. Fluid bronchial discharge may occur at the beginning of taking the drug. In this situation, it should be coughing up or suctioned out.
  4. The use of Ambroxol Aflofar as adjunctive therapy in patients with bronchial asthma may increase cough and excessive expectoration.
  5. People with a weakened cough reflex or impaired ciliary clearance of the bronchi should use the drug with caution because of the risk of secretion retention.
  6. Anticoagulants should not be used simultaneously with the drug.
  7. The sorbitol in the drug can cause diarrhea, and benzoic acid can cause asthma reactions and attacks in asthmatics.
  8. The excipients contained in the syrup (glycerol, propylene glycol) may lead to the occurrence of: headaches, allergies, gastrointestinal disorders.
  9. Pregnant and breastfeeding women may take the drug only after consulting a doctor and if necessary.
  10. There is no information on the safe use of the drug by breastfeeding women.

Ambroxol Aflofar with other drugs

  1. Cough suppressants should not be taken concomitantly with Ambroxol Aflofar as this helps to remove a large amount of liquid produced after liquefaction.
  2. Simultaneous use of Ambroxol Aflofar with antibiotics (amoxicillin, cefuroxime, doxycycline, erythromycin) increases their penetration into the lung tissue.
  3. Ambroxol can be taken simultaneously with medications used in bronchial diseases (spasmolytic drugs, corticosteroids, antibiotics), as well as with cardiac glycosides and diuretics.
  4. Theophylline and ambroxol intensify each other’s effects.

Ambroxol Aflofar – side effects

Taking Ambroxol Aflofar may lead to the following side effects:

  1. allergic reactions (rare): especially skin and mucosa reactions,
  2. anaphylactic reactions
  3. abdominal pain, nausea, constipation and heartburn (rare)
  4. rarely dry mouth and respiratory tract,
  5. increased salivation,
  6. runny nose,
  7. difficulty urinating.
