Alusal – when should it be used? Is Alusal available over the counter?

Alusal is a preparation used in gastric and duodenal ulcer disease, inflammation of the gastric mucosa associated with hyperacidity, and symptomatic treatment of reflux oesophagitis. The drug neutralizes the hydrochloric acid in the stomach, which is essential for proper digestion, but it can also damage the lining of the stomach. The preparation is in the form of lozenges and is dispensed without a prescription.

Alusal – indications and dosage

Alusal is a preparation used in:

  1. stomach and duodenal ulcers,
  2. in inflammation of the gastric mucosa associated with hyperacidity,
  3. symptomatic treatment of reflux oesophagitis.

Dosage

Alusal is a preparation in the form of lozenges, intended for oral use. Chew them or suck them slowly, do not exceed the recommended dose.

  1. Orally, usually 1-2 tablets. 1-2 hours after meals and additionally at bedtime or ad hoc in the event of ailments.
  2. You can take 12 tablets / day.

Alusal and contraindications

Contraindication to the use of Alusal tablets are:

  1. hypersensitivity to any component of the preparation,
  2. hipofosfatemia,
  3. narrowing of the large intestine,
  4. acute renal failure.
  5. use in parallel with isoniazid, methenamine or mecamylamine,
  6. use up to 6 years of age.

Alusal – warnings

  1. Do not use the drug for more than 4 weeks without consulting a doctor first.
  2. People with intolerance to certain sugars should consult a doctor before taking the drug.
  3. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should not use the preparation.

Alusal with other medications

Alusal may delay the absorption of other preparations.

In the case of using medicines containing a substance called:

  1. ciprofloksacyna,
  2. norfloksacyna,
  3. ketoconazole,
  4. doxycycline (also other antibiotics),
  5. digitalis glycosides

Before taking the preparation, consult your doctor in order to determine the required time interval between taking the preparation and any of the above medications.

  1. Taking other drugs (not mentioned above) at the same time should take place 2 to 3 hours after taking the preparation.
  2. Consult a physician when taking the drug simultaneously with preparations containing ephedrine. The dosage may need to be changed.
  3. Alusal should not be taken with or immediately after meals.

Alusal – side effects

During treatment with Alusal, the following may appear:

  1. constipation
  2. loss of appetite
  3. weakness,
  4. digestive tract infections (infectious diarrhea),
  5. urinary tract infections (pain and burning sensation when urinating),
  6. slight decrease in the activity of digestive enzymes in the stomach,
  7. acid-base disturbances in the blood (especially in patients with renal insufficiency).
