Aluminum wires – why they need to be replaced

If the apartment is located in a house built at the end of the last century, then with a high probability the electrical wiring in it is made of aluminum wires.

In this case, it is necessary to replace aluminum cables with more modern copper ones as soon as possible.

After all, this conductor has a number of serious shortcomings that make it not only short-lived and unreliable, but also potentially dangerous in operation.

Why are old aluminum wires so bad that professional electricians recommend getting rid of them?

So what is the danger

The fact is that this metal is characterized by a high fluidity index. Under the influence of compression in the places of screw connections inside sockets and switches, it gradually leaves the place of attachment, as a result of which the area of contact of the wires with the attachment points decreases, which leads to their burning.

In addition, aluminum has the ability to quickly oxidize, and the resulting film of oxides is stable.

Oxidation of the joints causes them to heat up even at moments of relatively low load.

Also, the material is inherently brittle in places of sharp bends, leading to the formation of cracks that weaken an already not the most reliable cable.

Energy consumption of apartments and houses is increasing

In recent years, people in cities have been increasingly using powerful household appliances with high energy intensity in everyday life – refrigerators and electric kettles, washing machines and microwave ovens, vacuum cleaners and irons.

Any of these devices during operation can easily consume 1000 watts or more of power. This creates a colossal load on low-quality aluminum wires and the moment of their failure is approaching.

Such unreliable aluminum wiring, the life of which at the time of its breakdown is several decades, covered with cracks and oxides, thinned and burned, one day can heat up to such temperatures that it will provoke a switch or socket on fire, from which not far from a real fire.

Therefore, if possible, change it to copper wiring as soon as possible.

Copper is free from all of these disadvantages. Yes, it costs a lot more. But isn’t it foolish to skimp on personal security? Good luck.
