Almost all Iranians contracted the coronavirus during the pandemic. Despite this, the country has not yet achieved herd immunity. Instead, a new wave of deaths driven by the Delta Coronavirus variant has been observed in Iran.
- Many Iranians have been infected with the coronavirus two or three times. Despite this, herd immunity has still not been achieved
- Only 23 percent. the inhabitants of the country are vaccinated
- How many infected are really in Iran today? It is hard to say, the country’s authorities have not provided such data for many months

Iran was one of the first countries to be hit by the coronavirus pandemic after China. Unfortunately, the vaccination process is still very slow here. According to Mahan Ghafari of the University of Oxford, by July 2021, only about 3 percent. of the population have been fully vaccinated against the coronavirus. Currently, it is about 23 percent.
Research into the coronavirus pandemic in Iran is hampered by limited official data. Iran’s Ministry of Health and Medical Education stopped publishing provincial-level data on confirmed cases and deaths in March 2020.
Low- and middle-income countries are more likely to under-underrate cases and deaths due to a lack of health infrastructure, according to Mahan Ghafari of the University of Oxford.

To deal with the lack of information, Ghafari and his colleagues analyzed data from the Iranian National Organization for Civil Registration (NOCR) on deaths in the first nine months of 2020. The real number of SARS-CoV-2 infections was estimated from the number of excess deaths.
In August, NOCR began publishing past weekly data broken down by age groups, which allowed scientists to reconstruct the dynamics of the Iran pandemic from January 2020 to September 2021.
Researchers have calculated how many people in each province have contracted the coronavirus. According to calculations, more than a third of the provinces (11 out of 31) had to be infected with one hundred percent of all inhabitants. In Sistan and Balochistan (despite being a single province) in the southeast of the country on the Gulf of Oman, figures indicated that 259% must have been infected. This means that the vast majority of residents of this province had to be infected with the coronavirus at least twice, and a little more than half as many as three times.

Iran has still not achieved herd immunity
Despite the coronavirus infection of virtually all Iranians, herd immunity has still not been achieved. The reasons for this are not yet entirely clear. This may be because, after being infected with the coronavirus, our immunity weakens over time. The emergence of new variants of the coronavirus may also be responsible for this, for which antibodies developed after infection with the older variant are not effective.
According to Mark Loeb of McMaster University in Canada, studies using direct measurement of infection are needed to ultimately determine the viral attack rate for a given population. However, he believes that the conclusions of the study are reliable.
Overall, all over the world it seems that antibodies are weakening, and there is no point where the herd immunity or herd effect is miraculously achieved.
– Loeb said, which he passed on to newscientist.com.

Loeb also reported that he did not know of any pathogens to which herd immunity was obtained without vaccination. By far the safest and most effective way to obtain immunity in a herd is through vaccination.
