Alexei Kondratyevich Savrasov (1830-1897) is one of the famous landscape painters of Russia and the founders of the Itinerant movement. With his work, he paved the way for a new stage in Russian painting. The most famous of all his works was the painting The Rooks Have Arrived.

The future painter was born in Moscow. His talent for drawing was discovered in childhood, and in 1844, against his father’s will, he began his studies at the painting school in Moscow. The first fame was brought to him by the work “View of the Kremlin from the Crimean bridge in inclement weather.”

He continues to write. In 1854, for the canvases “View in the vicinity of Oranienbaum” and “Sea coast …”, created near St. Petersburg, deserves the honorary title of academician.

Already in that period of Savrasov’s work, one can see how innovative his style was for painting. Constantly experimenting with color, he uses a wide, contrasting palette of shades.

From about the sixties to the eighties, Alexey Savrasov actively creates and participates in public life. He teaches, participates in the creation of a painting manual, as well as various exhibitions, including foreign ones. Receives several awards and becomes one of the founders of the “Association of the Wanderers”.

In this most prosperous period of his life, he creates his famous painting, which saw the light at the first exhibition of Itinerant artists: “The Rooks Have Arrived.”

Savrasov was able to very accurately portray this subtle, barely noticeable moment of the transition from winter to spring. The snow is still lying, but thawed patches and the first puddles are already visible. The variety of gray tones of the picture very accurately reflects the moment when nature is just waking up.

However, the arrival of rooks from distant countries and the gradually warming sky signify an imminent renewal and the beginning of a new life in nature.

last years of life

Closer to the eighties, a decline in the artist’s creativity is noticeable in connection with the developed alcoholism on the basis of a family tragedy. In 1871, his beloved daughter dies, and five years later the marriage falls apart. The wife, deprives him of the opportunity to see the children.
