The collection includes nine scenarios directed by Alexei German, written in collaboration with his wife, screenwriter Svetlana Karmalita. One of them — based on Stevenson’s novel «The Black Arrow» — was never realized, and work on the film «What the Tobacco Man Said from Tobacco Street» based on the Strugatskys’ novel «It’s Hard to Be a God» has been going on for many years. Another six scripts were filmed by different, often completely random directors. In the preface to the book, Peter Weil called the scenarios of Herman and Karmalita «dreams about Russia», the heroes of which are people-seekers — freedom, truth, ideal. For the first time, the texts of outstanding domestic filmmakers collected in one volume allow us to look at their work in a new way — not through the lens of a movie camera, but from the standpoint of great literature, of which they certainly are a fact.
