Short biography of Alan Maylie

There is very little information about him: a short biography and very modest information about his personal life. There are no photographs of the artist himself on the Internet. Absolutely not! None. Strange .. But his refined and elegant paintings that convey the whole atmosphere of the graceful age can tell about him.

Novels, balls, theaters, lace umbrellas and rustling dresses, ladies and gentlemen. The artist’s love for the 19th century and extensive research of this period (1890-1914), like no other, allow the viewer to travel back to this wonderful era.

You seem to find yourself in an insanely beautiful world. The air trembles in pictures bathed in sun and light. Somewhere you can hear the sound of skates on the rink, the quiet hum of voices in the beautiful living rooms …

Sometimes this romance is so lacking. We live in a different time and it becomes a little sad when I compare the ladies of that time in elegant dresses and hats with poorly dressed girls today (with fragments of panties visible from low-waisted jeans open to the eye).

Alan was born into an English aristocratic family in 1931, loved to paint and always wanted to be an artist.

After graduating from college, he had to make a choice: study at the prestigious Royal Academic School in London or become an apprentice artist in the film industry. He chose the world of cinema! But here fate gives Alan a great test: he contracted polio. While recovering, he learned to walk again, it took more than a year!

Alan becomes a continuous frame (special effects) artist in the world of cinema. In 1964, Walt Disney invited him to America to work in his studio.

In 1971, Alan Maylie and his associates were awarded an Academy Award for visual effects in the Disney film Bedknobs and Broomsticks. His work can also be seen in other films, such as:

  • “The Spy Who Loved Me”
  • “Dr. Strangelove”
  • “Beckett”
  • Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark

Dear reader, just imagine: with colossal employment in the film industry, he found time to work on his films! In 1995, the world lost this talented master and wonderful person. He was 64 years old.
